MT15 died

I have a PRS MT 15. Great sounding little amp--but I just blew up the second one. First one died at a gig--worked fine for sound check, then hit standby and it went dark. I replaced the tubes, and fuse (per repair folks at Sweetwater)--but it wouldn't power up at all. Sweetwater replaced it, and the same thing just happened to the new one practicing at home. Has anyone else had this problem? Speaker cab is the correct ohm--the only thing I can think of is if it's somehow the effects loop--since the only problems I see other people commenting about is the noisy loop. Noise hasn't really been an issue--just this. From what I can see, the loop isn't buffered. No idea if that would matter. Nothing goes through the effects loop except the "normal" stuff--reverb, delay. I appreciate any thoughts on this.

??

Have we seen other issues here with them that weren’t basic blown fuse or tube failure?
sorry, i meant to follow up yesterday but got distracted. here are a few other threads related to mt15 issues. i know there are more

That’s kinda what I was talking about. All new members, all offered basic fuse and tube troubleshooting advice, then disappear.

When a new member stops replying after basic tube troubleshooting advice, I assume that the amp is working again after tube replacement. Not always, but a very common theme here.

yeah fuses and tubes did not help. Sweetwater has been great standing by products but according to their repair people, PRS never tells them what was wrong--just that they confirm that it was defective. It's just really weird that it happened to me twice, and there appeared to be no one else with the problem. It has since been replaced by the MT15 Version 2. With this version I can see a huge change in the power/volume controls, in that the version 1 acted like a typical larger output tube amp. That is, volume at zero, you start turning up slowly ...nothing ...nothing..boom loud. This has a much more graduated volume knob. So, now I'm wondering if there was some issue with power attenuator. half power was still really loud on the old ones.

So my problem was not a dead amp but a noisy amp. It was not a microphonic cable/60-cycle-hum issue, but was the sound of NOISE with a faint whisper of guitar, and it was intermittent, but in a way that it was working fine and had not been moved and then it started having this issue. I put the cover back on and gave it a few gentle, loving "taps" and the problem went away.... for now. i haven't felt like driving an hour to the factory because i'm a well-practiced procrastinator. 😁

to your point, i should have updated my thread and will set about doing such momentarily

Yes, and obviously I wasn’t referring to you.

We get a lot of new users posting “my amp is dead “threads who disappear after basic tube infuse troubleshooting advice is given. In fact, most disappearing without either a “yes that fixed it” or a “no luck, had to send it to a tech” response.
