I thought I would start a thread to discuss the MEV and your favorite pickup selection settings. I just picked one up a couple weeks back and really liking it.

So which settings do you prefer? Also, when or what style of music is it best to use the settings that have all 3 pickups?

I have had one for a while, but I haven’t played much since getting it. When I do pick it up, I prefer single coil mode. I typically back off if the volume a bit, especially when in humbucker mode. I can’t say I will never use all three pickups at once, but so far I haven’t found that setting particularly inspiring.
I am a more of a clean tone person who uses a little overdrive.

I Was Hoping The Thread Title Was On A New Modern Eagle Flying V Guitar That Many Of Us Want... :)

I have an ME V that I purchased 2.5 years ago. When I purchaed the guitar, I was very nervous / susect that I would not like the single coil sounds. Turns out my fears were unfounded. Single coil sounds are very authentic, given the scale length of the guitar. (I am in the camp that thinks scale length has a lot to do with the tones that come out of a guitar). I use the neck singe coil and neck and middle single coil pick up positions often. ME V single coil sounds to my ears seem closer to Strat like then Tele like.

There are so many pickup combinations on this guitar, I have to make an xcell spreadsheet that i coud use for reference. If there is any interest in the spreadsheet, please send me a PM with your email address and I will send it to you.

Oh, humbucker sounds are also as you would except from PRS, just awesome. You can bring this guitar to a gig and all of your electric guitar needs are covered.

95% of the time I run the bridge in humbucking mode and the neck pickup in single coil. Really like the balance of those two sounds through a dirty amp. The middle pickup and 3-pickup combination? I barely use 'em.

I've had my MEV a couple of months now and have gravitated to using it set in HSS configuration using light crunch on the amp. The middle single coil pickup can sound a little weak on it's own sometimes but I use a clean boost pedal (Suhr Koko boost) or a Decibelics Golden Horse (Klon clone) to lift the volume and thicken it a bit when playing that pickup on it's own and it really comes to life. Rarely bother pulling the tone knob for those tones but they are nice to have as options.

Count me also for an HS or an HSS config. Often I'm just trying different configs to match what I need for worship band situations. Gary (above) how do you like your Golden Horse? I took the plunge and am locked into the next build rotation. Wondering if it might replace my Rocket Archer?

I like it a lot. It replaced a Wampler Tumnus which I have now sold. While they sound similar, the Tumnus had a bit of a bass boost thing going on and had an exaggerated “cocked wah” mid honk when the gain was turned up. Yes, a nasally mid boost is the Klon sound at higher gain but it seemed more notable on the Tumnus.

The Golden Horse sounds a bit more open and balanced to my ears and the texture of the gain is slightly different. The build quality and presentation box is exceptional too plus inside the back plate is a nice little personal message. I haven't played a real Klon but the Golden Horse is a slightly better sounding overdrive pedal than the Tumnus regardless of how close they sound to a real Klon. However, reading about the components used and dedication to accuracy in the build I would expect it to sound very close.
