I have currently got a 2004 made Modern Eagle 1 with Brazilian rosewood neck. Neck is in perfect shape but body has some dents. I haven't tried it on amp yet so I'm not sure how it sounds right now, but I'm not a big fan of vintage sound, I'm rather heavy rock metal lover. I just wanted to get a PRS and somehow managed to get this guitar...people around me say it's worths as much as private stock models so I should just keep it rather than selling it because I don't like the sound(of course it might change after playing it through amp).

How do you guys think of this guitar? I also thought about refinishing the guitar, maybe change color of the guitar, hide those little dents but it's originality will drop and wouldn't be good if I ever want to sell it later.

Modern Eagles are great guitars. ME I with a BRAZZY NECK is an amazing instrument. That is not a DIY guitar. Contact PRS directly, specifically the PTC, to enquire about what refurbishments they might recommend. If you don't like the sound, then sell it and buy an F-load of Schecters.

Prices are up there on anything with a Braz neck. For THAT guitar, don't have anyone besides PTC do anything to it finish wise or value will drop considerably. Honestly, who cares if it has some little dents? The amount of $ for a refin won't be recouped in a sale, so don't do a refin unless you are keeping the guitar for a long time.

Oh, I agree. I've had work done by the PTC and it was flawless. Still, even by the PTC, a re-fin is still a re-fin, and decreases the value.

I remember when they were brand new. The one that I held had paint on the neck and at $9k, I said I'd never buy one.

You know, when I started out playing guitar (a year ago or so), I thought I was going to be playing fully distorted power chords cranked to eleven, and not much more (I'm primarily a keyboard player). It really didn't take me very long to appreciate the value of clean playing and I've had my eyes (and ears!) opened to a lot of sounds I thought I wasn't interested in. You should definitely not mess with your ME1 until you've given it a chance -- seriously, take some time, dial in some tasty tones, and give it a real chance. I do have some Schecters and some Ibanezeses, but my Parkers and my PRSses are my primary guitars. I would even go so far as to say that I don't think my mental concept of "vintage tone" was what I thought it was.

The really really cool stuff happens in that middle ground between filth and clean, especially if you have an amp that makes great dirt, yet still sounds good when you roll the guitar's volume back to clean it up. It may take a few years for a guitarist to figure that out (hell, it took me 20 years!). The Modern Eagle is great for that kind of thing, and even better if you get 57/08 or 59/09 pickups into one!

If you're just slamming one of those beasts into a high gain amp, odds are good you'll think it's "too midrangey" or "not hot enough" depending on the amp and how you run it. My high gain head of choice is a Rivera Knucklehead Reverb, and the Modern Eagle is not a good match for it, but it sounds sublime with a THD Flexi 50 or a Budda Superdrive II.

My weapon of choice is a Mesa Blue Angel (4 x 10) with an Ethos OD in front. The ME1 is a later one with the 507/08s. Great combination from clean to "bluesy", though kicking in the "mid-boost" gets me nicely into Gary Moore territory.
