metal decal on headstock peeling away slightly...

Hi

As I announced on Friday, I bought a 2011 Studio. On close inspection I noticed, when I was giving the headstock a minor dusting, that the Paul Reed Smith metal decal is coming away slightly. I got a reasonable deal, with the guitar being a 2011 model, so I don't really, if at all, want to take it back to the dealer.

For now I will just have to be extremely careful when I am cleaning the headstock, but I am wondering if there is something I could do to stick it back down again, without ruining the finish.

Also, I've watched quite a few of the PRS production videos and as best as I can tell, the decal is applied after the topcoat is buffed up and is not lacquered over.

I'm going to send off the warranty card this week, and that will probably take a week or so to get across the pond. Once it is registered I might see if I can do the same.

Have you fitted yours? Must be a pain to locate properly?

Interesting - I've never seen or heard of this happening before. Would think it would be covered by warranty if the guitar was bought new and they'd take care of it if the guitar was sent in? Costly if you're overseas though.

I really wouldn't fancy sending it back in for that even if I was not overseas. I'm kind of in love with my newly aquired guitar and don't want to be without it for any amount of time

Yeah, I'm interested to know how it goes and what the procedure is to put it on.
i'll have to make a point while I'm at the Experience this year to see if I can see how and when they do it.

As for mine, I called the shop where I got my Studio from at the weekend and his immediate response was that I bring it back into the shop so that he can return it to the UK PRS depot for "repair." One the one hand, that would sound like the best option, considering I paid over £2000 for a guitar, however beautiful. But that involves a half hour trip in rubbish traffic (I know that is nothing to those on the other side of the pond LOL) and another half hour drive back. A two week wait and then another hour round trip.

I guess I should be patient, do the right thing and wait for a proper job to be done. I've asked him if I could think about it and get back to him in a couple of weeks (off to the Download Festival this weekend), and he said that would be okay, now that I have informed them of the problem.

A new decal could fix my problem too, and it would mean that I wouldn't miss my guitar. Trouble is, I would need the "Reed" part of the signature, more that a simple "P," and is why I am thinking of the "right" option...

I can tell you from experience, NEVER use polish of any kind on the front of the head stock if you have the gold raised logo. The moisture will cause the adhesive to lift. I found out when I went to clean up a pretty dirty used PRS I took in on trade. Not thinking I gave a light spray to the headstock As I wiped it down I took the P and R right off. If you do need to clean a dirty headstock, lightly put the polish on the cloth and be very careful.

I'm something of a safety enthusiast. Because I firmly believe that all products need warning stickers prominently displayed in areas that present a possible danger, I always remove the PRS sticker and add a day-glo orange sticker with black lettering to the front of my PRS headstocks. I've had these stickers custom made by a major automotive sticker supplier. For safety reasons, the stickers are not removable. The stickers say:

Nonetheless, PRS was fabulous supporting a used instrument.
