McCarty Wiring Question

When I roll down the volume of my 2000 McCarty, particularly if I have a clean amp tone, the tone loses its treble and becomes darker and muffled. I have an old McCarty Electronics Diagram that shows the "Pre-2007" and the "Current" control wiring layout. The only differences I see between the two are that the capacitor is soldered between different lugs on the tone and volume controls and the ground wire is soldered to a different lug on the tone control.

My question: If I change my wiring to match the "Current" diagram, will that solve my treble loss problem?

If not, what was PRS trying to accomplish with the wiring change?

Is the current wiring diagram showing the tone capacitor going from the middle lug of the volume to the outside of the tone, and the ground coming off of the middle lug of the tone control? And the 'pre-2007' kinda the other way around?

If so, this is the difference between so called '50s wiring' and 'modern' wiring (with the pre-2007 being the modern). The 50s wiring is said to preserve some of the treble when the volume is reduced so yes, if you change the wiring to the current scheme it may help you out.

The alternative is a treble bleed mod (treble bypass more correctly) where a small capacitor is soldered into the volume pot. This bypasses some of the treble content when the volume is reduced thereby keeping some brightness. I personally am not too fond of this mod as it changes the taper of the volume so that it seems to work over a much smaller range.

The Current shows the capacitor going from the middle lug of tone to middle lug of volume and ground going from outside lug of tone to the volume bottom. The Pre-2007 has capacitor going from outside lug of tone to outside lug of volume and ground going from middle lug of tone to the volume bottom.

Ah, that's my knowledge of electrickery exhausted, I'm mechanical by profession. Maybe someone else will chime in

Thanks for your reply. I think your basic answer of the difference in the two wiring schemes is probably correct, so I'm going to change mine to the "Current" wiring. Whatever it does must be better or PRS wouldn't have changed it.

Yeah it probably is still along those lines. There seems to be many ways to wire a guitar up, each with their own quirks. Unless you know the theory it's all a bit of guess work.
