Been playing on and off for the last 40 years!! Been through countless guitars, amps, pedals, etc... Recently picked up a Zach Myers SE and a Bugera V22 all tube amp and to me the ZM straight into the Bugera has the best tone that I have ever had!! The pure tube gain to me sounds better than any pedal I have ever tried. Anything from super clean to Metallica can be emulated with this package IMHO!! Pedals are great to color your sound, but I am starting to think that a good guitar straight into a tube amp is the way to go!
May be getting old, however???

I've been playing electric for 49 years, I went through the rack and multi pedal stage .. still have some, but I love just being to just plug and play with any of my tube amps . The PRS Sewell's and old Mesa never disappoint .
To reduce or limit yourself to a simple set-up/rig consisting of guitar-cable-amp (either combo or top + cab) offers two things: time just to play and discover the potential of the controls of your guitar and the impact of your playing techniques.
I go through “straight in” times, and pedals other times. Part of it is I’m not very consistent, part of it is clients ask for a variety of sounds and I need to be ready for lots of alternatives.
It’s all personal preference of course, but it’s hard to beat guitar>>amp.
Gain pedals make things different, but not often better. On the other hand, I need my delay, modulation, etc pedals often.
