Dear folks,

I just bought a PRS Tremonti SE Standard black. Love the guitar. It has a three way switch and a 4 knob controls, A volume-tone pair for each pickup (bridge and neck) But I am unable to comprehend how the controls work in tandem with the switch.

My understanding is

In position one (the neck pickup) The first set of volume and tone controls Should vary what I hear.
In position two (both pickups) The both sets of volume and tone controls Should vary what I hear.
In position three (the bridge pickup) The second set of volume and tone controls Should vary what I hear.

Am I wrong?

Here is what I observe

In position one (the neck pickup) Both volume controls vary what I hear. But tone knobs have no effect.
In position two (both pickups) Only the bridge volume has no effect. All other controls vary what I hear
In position three (the bridge pickup) Both Volumes have no effect but the tone knob varies what I hear.

I have a Boss Katana Mini Amp hooked, I am running with tone control switch in Clean mode. Gain at 9 O’Clock, Volume at 2 O’Clock.

Can you please enlighten me on this?

Thanks So Much!!

Are you sure you know which ones are volume and which are tone? The PRS diamond pattern is different than a Les Paul. The top forward control is volume and the one below it is tone. the back top diamond is volume and the low and back most control is tone. On a Les Paul they are switched 90 degrees. The front top and bottom are volumes and the back top and bottom are tones. Also, if either one of the volumes is all the way off the volume will short to ground (no sound). You have to have a small amount of the controls "on" to get sound from the rest of the controls (both LP's and PRS's). It's funny that way.

The knob positioning is based on Marks preference on his personal guitars. So, when you were in position 1, one knob was acting as volume and the other as tone. The other 2 knobs are rendered null, as they and the other pickup are "turned off" the same would be true of the other pickup and knobs when in position 3. Another way of thinking about it, is the volume and tone control pairs are turned 90 degrees from what you may have previously used to.

Depending on the guitarcontrol layout is:

Neck Volume Top Front, Tone Bottom Front / Bridge Volume Top Back, Tone Bottom Back

Or

Neck Volume Top Front, Tone Top Back /
Bridge Volume Bottom Front, Tone Bottom Back.

Thanks so much for your replies. My presumption was The top two are volume controls and the bottom two are tone controls. In fact I did see this on one of the sites.

But the behavior seems to somewhat imply that the top two are volume and tone knobs for the neck pickup and the bottom two are the volume and tone knobs for the bridge pickup.

Or is there something wrong with my guitar?

That set up sounds correct to me. That is how they are laid out on my SE245.

I assume the Tremonti SE controls are laid out the same as the core Tremonti. This is different than the LP layout.

If you're looking at the guitar from the front, the controls on the core Tremonti are laid out as such:

Bridge Volume Neck Volume

Bridge Tone Neck Tone

As opposed to a Les Paul (or 594), which is:

Neck Tone Neck Volume

Bridge Tone Bridge Volume

Web spacing did me no favors on that!

I first encountered that on my SC5708. It really threw me at first, but once I adjusted, it seems so much more logical to me. Now I can switch back and forth pretty seamlessly, but every now and then it throws me.
