Are the maple tops on PRS guitars (specifically the custom core) always 2 pieces? I'm asking because some pictures I've seen online of flamed tops don't have a visible seam. Is that because they matched it really well, or are some of them actually single piece tops?

Aha. So I'm assuming a one piece is desirable and costs more? Are they special order?

The only time you can order one from what I understand is when you order a Private Stock guitar. One of the members here started a PS build recently, and that build is being delayed until they get some one piece tops in stock because that is what he has requested and paid for (it does cost extra on a PS build, but I do not know how much). With the Core, WL and Artist models that are out there, one piece tops are NOT an extra charge, but the used market may inflate the price for one piece tops! I personally LOVE the one piece tops and have been collecting pix of each one I see for the past few years and own a one piece top guitar, but it is not a maple cap as it is the 594 HBII model. My estimate, based on daily browsing of different sales platforms, would be that 1 in 100 or so are one piece tops, maybe less.

As Has Been Said, They Are Definitely Out There. In Some Cases A Properly Matched 2 Piece Can Actually Look Better. I have Seen Some Amazing Tops On Both 1 And 2 Pieces And Some Not So Amazing Or Amazing In Parts But Not Balanced In Places (Which Annoys Me). If The Guitar Plays, Sounds, Feels Right To You Then Go For It Regardless Of If It Is A 1 Or 2 Piece Top.

Meh. They're a niche item. Most players would go for the book matched look; it's classic and looks great. The one-piece top is for people who like something a bit different.

If PRS have a big enough board in the wood pile, they'll use it. Otherwise, they keep some really fancy stuff in the vault for Private Stock orders.

Thanks folks! I'm a long time casual player just now learning more about how these wonderful instruments are made.
As Bogner said, a "properly" matched two piece can be the bomb and better than some one pieces IMO! Thing is, most of them don't have the match factor that I want. I want 90%+ matching at the center point on a two piece top, otherwise it look cheap to me. I know it is not cheap and I understand why it happens, but that is the impression I get when I look at an unmatched center seem. My PS is a two piece top, and I think it looks incredible and my core CU24 is "acceptable" to me, but I would not have purchased it just for it's top!

Cool, thanks for the examples. Those are some sweet guitars... especially Wolfy MooNAMM. Such a good matching job.

I’ve come across a few in person. I’d like to have one but either the model or condition hasn’t been what I wanted. Two piece tops are just as nice but certain one pieces are off the charts

A one piece curly maple top is my fav when it comes to pretty tops. Some of those shown in the PS Friday thread bring tears to my eyes….

One piece look terriffic, but rare like hens teeth. I would love to own one
