Thought I'd ask this question, b/c it seems like a lot of you guys have significant experience either working for PRS or working on your own guitars. I'm interested in attending a luthier school or training program in the Maryland area. Something I could do "part-time", maybe a few days a week after work (read: definitely not looking for a full-time school program). However, it would have to be a certificate program, not a degree program. Here's why:
While in the Air Force, I used my GI Bill benefits to pay for my master's degree. I kept the old Montgomery Bill, as it was better suited to my needs at the time. Per the rules of the program, I can't use the remaining money for another degree unless I get a Ph.D.; I have neither the time nor the inclination for such an endeavor. However, the program will also pay for one professional certification. I've been wracking my brain trying to come up with a cert to get...personal training certs are relatively cheap and I could do it on my own...any work-related certs would be paid for by my employer...I thought maybe getting a pilot's license, but when would I ever use it? Then I thought, "wait a minute...I love guitars, I've begun tinkering with them...I wonder if there's such a thing as a luthier certification?" I've been on a quest ever since!
I'm hopeful that given the wealth of knowledge and connections on this forum, someone out there knows of a program, or knows someone who knows of a program, or...well, you get the drift. Any of you guys out there (especially the PRS employees floating around here who work with ridiculously talented luthiers all day long!) feel like dropping a little knowledge and advice on a guy who's trying to take the first steps? Any and all input would be very much appreciated! Thanks!!!
