Love My Custom 22. Don't love the 58/15's

I suspect this has been talked through before, but I just don't love the 58/15's in my custom 22. I use a Bogner Ecstacy Classic, and the rhythm is decent, but when I go to solo it's thin and brittle.

Would love some suggestions for replacement pickups for classic rock tones. I play in a Kansas tribute called Portrait, and use moderate to low gain for most everything.

Thanks all!

All of my CU22's have had dragon 1's or 2's. Liked them both but preferred the 2's. They get no love though. Maybe because they were the "regular" pup in the custom 22's for so long that everyone looked for something less "generic", but I love mine.

My 22 also has Dragon 2's... very hot and punchy. I have never changed any of my PRS pups but my thoughts for them are Duncan JB or Antiquities for myself. Still hoping to get out and see you guys soon!

Have you tried adjusting the pickup height? Can make a big difference. If they look low (like neck pickup level or lower than the pickup ring), try raising them a turn or two. If they are high (neck pickup a mm or two above the pickup ring) then try lowering them.

I'll second this, along with the pole screws. The 58/15 should be smack dab in the wheelhouse for what you are playing.

For nailing an old Livgren tone I’d be focusing more on the rest of the rig, personally, and that Bogner is a good choice. Then an old 1960a with old greenbacks and NOS Mullard 12ax7s in the Bogner. Then twist the guitar’s tone knob down to 3.

I haven’t. That’s a great idea!

If they're a bit on the low side that could easily be your problem right there. The height makes a big difference to sound. Just don't get them too close or you'll lose sustain and get odd overtones as the pickup magnets affect the strings

I’m just impressed that I read something on the Intarwebby with proper word choice and spelling. The effect of listening in English class...:D
Ha ha, I'm genuinely glad it was appreciated. I made a conscious effort to pick the right one! Though I am an Engineer by profession and the whole affect/effect thing comes up an awful lot in reports so I'm used to double checking that I've picked the right one.

Good for you, bud! I’m impressed by the smallest modicum of cranial capacity, anymore. ;) I see the general population like this...
