Has anyone had any experience with finish touch up/ repair on the PRS red stained mahogany finish that is often used on headstock, necks, backs? I have a 1998 McCarty model, and the beautiful red stained mahogany headstock has a chip taken out of the point, exposing the raw, unfinished mahogany. Does anyone have any advise/ experience matching the red stain that is used on the mahogany. I’d like to apply some stain, and maybe even go over it with clear coat/ nitro, to make it less noticeable than having a bare mahogany chunk showing. I also have a knock in the bottom horn that I’d love to address. Took it to Elderly Instruments, and they don’t do this type of finish work.
Any advice would be appreciated, so thanks.

It’s a kind of suck it and see approach with that type of repair (yes I know you’re not really gonna want to hear this).

This might be of help

Red stain in super glue is one approach, however you will need to make up a mixture as close to the finish and hope it dries the same colour!

If you can find a piece of scrap mahogany that matches your guitar headstock/body, a test piece is the best way to go.

You may find a supplier that will make you up a tinted lacquer, however remember that as your guitar is over 20 years old, there may have been some fading/colour change. It will not just be a case of ordering a coloured lacquer that would have matched your new instrument. (Apologies for the teaching granny how to suck eggs but if you have considered all of the above).

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do.
