All 6 of my SE's (2 are pictured) now have locking tuners installed and I couldn't be more pleased!!!

Can someone explain the benefit of locking tuners? I don't get it. Are they supposed to replace a locking nut? Because I don't see how.

I hate changing strings to the point that I leave a set on way too long
I just got my first guitar with locking tuners and Im really happy
As far as non lockers I’ve never had any kind of issue except changing strings

They’re especially helpful for us lazy slackers who hating stretching strings.

Uhhh... I'm down for lockers ... But 'ya still gotta stretch strings if 'ya wanna stay in tune ...:)

I just wonder why this PRS purchased part ... seems to cost more than virtually any other brand of locker  ...

Offhand, I'd say you're paying for the brand name, the quality and prestige that goes with PRS. Many of us know that only PRS SE locking tuners are direct replacements for SE non-locking tuners, whereas other brand names you risk needing drill, deface and/or fill set screws not designed for non-PRS tuners.

IMHO, the rationale is that you pay slightly more for avoiding the extra hassle of drill/fill that other brands might require.

Pretty much. I like the SE lockers fine, but they only come in chrome.

Not the only direct replacement.

Grover 406c fit perfectly, and you can even swap their little bean keys out for your stock ones. It is a different kind of locking, with an automatic behavior that some don’t love.

Hipshots should work fine too, you just use their mounting plate.

You can also get John Mann’s converted SE locking tuners.

The PRS ones cost more because it’s what the market will bear.

Thanks. I had thought there were additional direct replacements available on the web, but somewhat tempered my response saying it was the PRS brand name we were paying for. The MannMade SE tuners would be perfect for the SE models. (I've not checked John's price compared to the PRS SE tuners, so I can't say whether the MannMade's would be a "better" choice for less money or not.)

EDIT: There are several MannMade USA SE model tuners that cost less than the PRS SE. Some models are gold or chrome modified for a nicer visual appeal, costing slightly more than standard chrome PRS USA SE tuners. It was noted that some of the MannMade tuners will NOT fit Zach Meyer or Bernie Marsden SE models. These require separate SE tuner sets.

Interesting. I assumed they would fit any SE. I use Gotoh an all mine, and I've only had to ream out holes once. It was the PG, the stock tuners are weird as they have a much thinner shaft than a traditional Kluson.

Shim,

That's good news. I recall viewing where John Mann offers a service to convert the PRS non-lockers. If that's less than the cost of new locking tuners, that would be well worth the work.

EDIT: Just checked the MannMade tuner conversion price. Yep, that's a decent price. Only issue is the lead/wait time to receive your tuners back from the Vault. Time to break out the other guitars for a while!

Nope. When you click on the page to order, there's a disclaimer about Bernie and Zach's. Both require a specific tuner model, which John has on his website. IIRC, the 7025 tuner model.

Ah, yeah those look like the replacements for the ones I mentioned. The Kluson design. Did'nt realize the ZM and Bernie had those too.
