Locking tuners on Custom 24 , too tight?

I broke a string for the first time on my Custom 24 (D string) about 2 inches from the ball. I spent time re-tuning my guitar and then finished the song. When I had an opportunity to change the string, the locking tuner was so tight that I was removing skin from my thumb and index finger. I actually could not loosen it. I had to use my house key in my pocket to loosen it by going in the slot.

I never tighten the screws that much when I put on the strings, just hand tight. When I was home, I changed the rest of the strings and all the screws were all tight. Do they tighten on their own after you tune the strings on a regular basis? Is this why there is a slot on the screw to use a small screw driver to loosen the strings? This would mean I would need to leave a small screw driver in my guitar case.
I don't have this problem with my Silver Sky locking tuners by the way.

Anyone else find this issue?

I use a pick to tighten and to loosen the thumb screw.

I've noticed that the thumb screws on my 35th Anniversary Custom 24 are considerably much more "snug" than all my other guitars, with one or two of those tuners (namely the D and the high E) being exceptionally more rigid and difficult to both tighten and loosen. I just figured the threads on the thumb screws were just machined a little out of spec.

Like Glide said, though...I use a tool (heavy pick, plastic screw driver) to tighten and loosen the thumb screws anyways, so it's not too much of a big deal for me.

They generally don't need to as tight as you may think...according to a tech here in ny...I just use my fingers til is tightish...
