I know the past couple of days i have asked a few questions back to back. But this is the last one i swear!
I am going to be replacing the nut on my 2000 Singlecut as it appears one of the previous owners of this guitar was using some monster gauge strings and the A string is fretting out on the first fret due to sitting extremely low in the nut slot. I picked up a replacement nut from PRS for the wide fat neck, are these nuts meant to be drop in ready? or will i need to file down the bottom to get factory string height at the first fret? I have never replaced a nut myself before, but wanted to give it a try.

Anyone here have any experience replacing a nut on their PRS with a PRS pre slotted nut?
Please share your experience.
Thanks!

I bought in 2016 a SE Mark Holcomb.
I let replace the genuine SE nut to the US nut for Wide Thin necks.
And though they are slotted, that doesn't mean that this is apropriate to your individual action and prefered gauge.
If the nut is not slotted perfectly to the given factors, you risk tuning instability (especially caused by the wound bass strings) according to high friction.
I let my guitar tech do the job.

I've done a couple. Just knocked the old one off with a hammer and flat blade. Cleaned up the old glue. Put some glue on the new one and slapped it on. Done.
And string height at first fret was good? I did put the new nut up against the one on the guitar now and they appear to be exactly the same cut. But obviously the slots on the new one are not cut as deep. Which I am fine with because I am comfortable fine tuning the slots.

Sure was. I didn’t have to do any work on the nut

I have done a few nut replacements and so far I have only needed to smooth the ends of the nut

Ok well old nut is knocked off, and new nut is installed and drying. Clamped the new nut down with string tension. I'll let is sit over night and see how she is in the morning. I dry fitted first to check the string heights at first fret and i was exactly in PRS spec for all strings. I even held the old nut against the new nut after i removed it and for the most part it was exactly the same size, only difference being is the shoulders on the old nut were a little more rounded off. which i can always shape the top of the nut after it dries. So here is to hoping my glue job is good! i used only a little glue, as i have read it only really takes a few spots to get a good glue. and this makes it easier down the road if the nut ever needs to be removed again, to ensure it doesn't take chunks of wood out with it.
With any luck i'll be back up and playing this guitar by tomorrow minus the constant fret buzz on my a string!

Well had some issues getting this done
Unfortunately I checked on the nut this morning and it popped right off. I thought I cleaned of any left over glue residue, I only used few dots of glue as I didn't want to over glue it. But alas, it popped right off. So I decided to take it in and have someone do it for me lol. Hopefully sometime next week I'll get it in to have it done.

Well, Dropped it off yesterday to have a new nut installed. Decided to actually go with a bone nut. None of my other gutiars have bone, so i figured let's try something different. Shop is really backed up with service, so it's gonna be a bit of a wait. Can't wait to get it back, as i was really enjoying the guitar.
