Lampshades

I have painted the back side of some lampshades knobs.

The first attempt, I cut round hole in some light cardboard to lay over the lampshade so spray paint would only hit back side.

That didn't work too well. I did two this way in black. One didn't get enough paint deep down and the paint started to eat the knob material before paint took hold. The other turned out fine.

I did two for my Vela today but I didn't want to spray em like I did before.

I had white spray paint but no tiny brush to be found. I sprayed it in a small plastic cup and used 12 GA wire flattened out like a brush to apply paint down in the back side of lampshade and bottom of center hole.

The white turned out very nice. It doesn't quite match the vela white like I thought it would but its close.

To be clear, these are the "black" lampshades not the clear ones so there is some clear on these which allows paint from the back side to show through.

I am betting model paint would work well for this purpose. Sounds like there may be some ingredients in the spray paint that eat into the plastic. I don't know that you would have that issue with the model paint. Although, who knows, it is possible it would do the same thing.

I haven’t had any trouble with spray paint eating the plastic.

But it’s always a surprise for me whenever spray paint reacts adversely with something, you (I) just never know.

I think you'd be set if you did very light mist coats and let each coat dry very well before applying the next.

A paper match torn out of the pack makes a very effective bootleg paint brush.

I think you are correct. Only black and amber now. They used to offer clear as a 3rd option.

I don't have a 3rd party photo account so I can't post pics.
