John's SS vs. Stock.

At one of the Namm's they did grab a Super Eagle off the wall for JM to demo his new amp.

I thought that was pretty cool.

To OP: I've often wondered the same thing regarding Johns SS he uses with Dead & Co.

As a PRS dealer, I asked that question of my Rep when I first took on the line. I was told that all artists play production instruments with the exception of the Super Eagle which as well all know was Private Stock. David Grissom was the first to say he wanted his fans to be able to play the same guitar he does. Same with Zach Meyers. He plays the SE on the road. They may get an extra special setup but most of those guys have a guitar tech that will do that to any guitar they get so...maybe not.

Interesting take, but I suppose this also means, since they are always tinkering, that sometimes John is playing an SS that *worse* than what you would buy. Otherwise there'd be no reason to test things.
I guess that is certainly possible but PRSi are pretty bang on.

It’s a bit of a pointless discussion really.

I mean, even if you could actually go out and buy a SS in EXACTLY the same spec and setup as JM you still aren’t going to sound like him playing it, you’re going to sound like you playing it. So why worry about it?

Ahhh, the old “sound vs. sound” argument.

As John himself says, he can now walk into any retailer and take a SS off the wall and it will feel, play and sound the same as his own personal models.

That doesn't mean that he doesn't have some SS's, particularly prior to release that were 'prototypes' - different Radius, different frets etc that were sent out to test and the feedback from John used to refine the specs. No doubt John can get 'special' versions made just for him - whether its a Maple fretboard, special/limited colour, maybe a bound fretboard etc etc that may show up on stage but may not make it to a retail version.

You never know if he is playing a 'retail' version, a 'prototype' for maybe some new version (like the Maple fretboard model or new colour choice) or a special, personal edition gifted to him from PRS.

Mark Holcomb and Zach Myers both use their 'SE's' a lot. I believe Holcomb will replace the tuners for locking tuners but both use their SE's as well as 'core/PS' versions they have 'bought' from or been 'gifted' by PRS. Taking 1 photo/song from a show as definitive proof they don't 'use' the same guitars we can buy doesn't really tell the truth...

If I buy an (insert famous guitar player here) signature model,
take it home and set it up for me, is it still an (XXX) model or
is it now a "Tony M." signature model?
How about if I change the bridge pickup out?
Etc.
When is it no longer his/hers and now mine?

It is a "famous guitar player" model in Tony M configuration :)
