John Mayer and the PRS Super Eagle

Ya, this thing is all kinds of gorgeous...

Middle pickup, f-hole, neck binding! I'm a fool for microswitches too! What a guitar... now how to broach the topic of a second mortgage with my wife...

Great sounding guitar, but I almost feel like he's a few years too late in doing this. Seen quite A LOT of hate on social media for this guitar too on everything from it being Josh Mayer, to 'no one cares about PRS anymore,' to 'way too expensive.'

Hate on social media will not diminish the awesomeness of this axe, or John's talent. Haters can go waste their time hating. 100 non-haters will be enjoying a really really spectacular-looking and unique instrument.

Haters gonna hate.

No one agrees on everything. And it's a sad fact that people are frequently more interested in negatives than positives. So, things that are "wrong" get lots of attention ('wrong' being in the eye of the hater).

The irony is that the better and better PRS instruments get, the more haters speak up. Life can be disappointing when you find yourself being left behind or on the wrong side of the tracks.

No-one cares about PRS anymore? Must be why there's nearly half a million likers on facebook and 272k followers on IG.

As for cost, I don't see anyone complaining about the cost of race cars, bicycles, or any other tool that a professional uses. Didn't JM also have a real Dumble?

It's like saying "JM sucks because he uses a guitar I can't afford, so I can't sound like him, so that guitar sucks too" and I'm sure we can all see the failure of logic there.

Yeah, I think Mayer is a great ambassador for PRS, not because of his personality (not a fan) but because of his playing (a huge fan). The guy has serious chops and is a serious tone hound to boot. If he plays it, it'll sound good. No surprise really that he's leaning into the PRS camp because few companies are putting out their quality, even if they are expensive.

People just love hating on John Mayer.

I remember when Fender came out with his Strat model. People went nuts. "He doesn't deserve..."

Then Two-Rock came out with the JM Signature amps. The haters on TGP had a field day: "He doesn't deserve....and that amp is too expensive."

Of course, the amps sounded great, and according to Hans, they've what, tripled in value in just a few years?

Let 'the haters hate. It just makes telling them to screw off that much more fun. ;)

I grew up in the next town over from where he grew up. We would see him playing in the **** local bars in Bridgeport, CT and then his career blew up in a matter of a few years. Not a ***** at all. I kind of feel a bit sorry for him because he handled the fame really badly and most of the people in this area completely wrote him off because of it. They wanted to give him a key to the city at his high school but he had security concerns and never showed up - great example.

Regardless, he has the chops and that is a beautiful guitar.

I like that there is at least 3 threads on this guitar on this forum alone.:D
And Im alright with JM as a human. He did and said some stupid **** when he was younger. Who hasnt? But he is outstanding to his fans and a great player. I just dont like his voice, but he does sound good with the dead.

JM has the best timing and smooth natural playing of anyone around. He makes it look easy, and that is talent....He has the chops for sure.

I don't know him and never will so his integrity is not my concern. Beautiful, if busy guitar. It's really a phenomenon about how hated PRSi have always been by a certain segment of the guitar playing public with moths in their wallet. Part of it is envy for being able to have the ability to have one or twenty, part of it is brand loyalty, even if it misplaced on lesser guitars. My old girlfriend had a saying, "if you got it,flaunt it, cause those that don't, sure do want it"...it seems to be the case with PRSi.

The JM hate occurs, I think, because he ""didn't earn it" lol
He got his fame too young, and that doesn't work with the blues. How can you know the blues when you're a teen? Etc.

The fact is that he can play. So whatever anyone may believe about him or his past, he's earned my respect. I like his guitar design.

Maybe in a few years they will come out with a core model that has most of the features you see above. I like the longer scale length in particular. It is a beauty..

I don't think age is the concern. Joe Bonamassa and Jonny Lang got street cred very early and are not polarizing figures like Mayer is. Joe and Jonny touted their careers as learning from the masters vs. Mayer wanted to replace the masters and made it very clear early in his career.

Really ? replace the masters ? Funny how Clapton, Scofield, Weir, Hancock, Joel, Sting and so on have invited him to work with them. Mayer bypasses Joe's bombastic style (not sure what master he's honoring with the 1000 notes per second shred) with taste and ability to transcend genres and Lang, well...he's drifted off into another genre not even resembling his "Lie to Me" days.

I saw a Youtube Video recently where Eric Clapton was being interviewed and he called John Mayer "a master guitarist" (a direct quote). Unfortunately, I can't seem to find it now or I would post a link.

As far as his personal life goes, I don't know him so I really don't care what he says or does. What I do know is he can play the guitar really well (see above comment) and he can sing and compose and arrange songs with the best of them.

I'm pretty sure it's in here... but it's a long one I can't check now.
