JNC Makes some points on the "Souless" argument

Aside from the topic at hand, JNC seems to think every mental diarrhea he has needs to be shared with the world.
Yes some of his videos are informative. Others are just his random stream of consciousness which are just a pure waste of time!
I get this to an extent. His is of course trying to use this to make a living. Naturally you don't actually have to watch all the videos. I know John personally but I'll happily skip a video if I'm not bothered by the topic

Got another youtube idea for John; "is PRS truly only for blues lawyers?"

But honestly, the "I need to talk about it" YT format and having absolutely nothing to say makes me puke in my mouth a little.

John seems to be a guy I would love to spend time with, talk gear and jam, but his recent activity and easiness to piss off everyone kinda made me to avoid his videos

I wish him well, though

Totally get that. It must be really hard to constantly think up subjects to talk about/make videos of. Sometimes less is definitely more. But I think the videos give John a reason to be able to play guitar every day, in that respect they are a means to an end rather than the end goal itself. I think if John were to do less, but more thought out and professional videos it would take as much effort but with far less excuse for picking up the guitar and playing

That's a fair point. Would I swap with him? Yeah!!!! I probably would do things exactly the same way. I bet there's element of burn out and all.

Like I said earlier, I wish him well

I've been a long time PRS fanboy, and in fact, my first ever "good" guitar was my 1997 CE 22 Maple Top that I still have to this day. I've had that guitar for the better part of 25 years (bought second hand). It's got LOTS of soul. So does my Core Custom 22 that I got in 2009, so does my S2 10th Anniversary Custom 24, so does my Core Custom 24 35th Anniversary. Same goes for the S2 Custom 22 Semi-hollow, the S2 Singlecut Semi-hollow, and the S2 594 Singlecut that that I had. Sadly, these guitars just couldn't find footing for my style of playing (and I swapped the 594 for my S2 10th since I wanted something that was just a little more modern sounding and feeling).

I have always taken folks comments that PRS have no soul compared to Fender and Gibson to be a justification for the less than consistent quality control across those two brands at various points in time. Hell, back in 2008, I bought a Custom Shop Les Paul Custom in Alpine White that came shipped to my local shop after I had special ordered it with a loose solder joint on the treble pickup volume pot. At the time this was a $3k guitar. I can tell you, I've had many Gibsons and if soul in a Gibson is measured by how much of a headache it is to get a brand new guitar to play well for you or to keep the third and fourth strings in tune, then Gibson has that in spades. I can't say much for Fender as my experience with the brand is limited to a sample size of one and that sample has been outstanding.

2-3 subpar videos a day is just basically screwing his revenue stream. 1 video a day with a well thought out topic rather than 3 with random nonsensical musings will grow his channel better!
The JHS pedal video pretty much showed how he has very little knowledge of what he speaks of!

I don't think his youtube presence is his primary focus.

I hate the Soul or Blues Lawyer thing but PRS will always be fighting an uphill battle. F and G are legacy brands with decades of a head start.

I embrace how far we have come in such a short time.

Paul is the Leo of our day.

btw - I do like and subscribe to JNC

Being the kinda guy who doesn't believe in the supernatural, I put the idea of a 'soul' in the same category as leprechauns and fairies. If people don't have 'em, inanimate objects certainly don't.

On the other hand, if by 'soul' people simply intend it as shorthand to mean an instrument sounds the way they like, I'm OK with that. They can say whatever they want about my instruments.

And I can tell them to go f#ck themselves.

That's my shorthand for "I don't give a rat's ass for your opinion unless you're writing me a check for a creative and session fee -- so either get your checkbook out, or shut up."

The shorthand's a time-saver. Saves me a whole paragraph of hot air.

The next generation's guitar icons are playing PRS increasingly, so their audience will have different "sounds in their heads" growing up than we did. As our generation or two depart the surface of the planet, the blues lawyer and soul criticisms they invented will likewise disappear.

Though clients and producers will ask for a specific sound, which they're entitled to do as far as I'm concerned.

On the other hand, I'm thinking that AI might trigger a resurgence of accordion music.

"How's that?"

"Machines might not be programmed to play the accordion. Or they might be too embarrassed."
