Any dead heads in the group ? Anyone recommend a cheap filter for that Jerry Estimated tone? Not looking to spend $300. For a filter.

While I'm definitely not a Deadhead, I am a envelope filter fan and a cheapskate.

My answer is a Zoom MS50g. It's cheap and it has a few autowah and filter emulations, it also has the up/down switch (particularly important for Jerry tones), and if you use the "line selector" effect you can add a bunch of other effects to your chain to toggle on/off (i.e.: OD/boost/delay/reverb) that a plain old dedicated envelope filter won't have.

You just gotta be cool with it being a digital pedal and get over the fact that it's made by Zoom.

I suppose you also mean an alternative to buying one of these to get that Jerry tone, right? :P

The Private Stock “Super Eagle” is the result of a very close collaboration between Paul Reed Smith and Grammy-winning musician John Mayer. The goal of the partnership was to create a highly-sophisticated and unique instrument that at once reveres the history of guitar-making and guitar tone but pushes the boundaries of materials, design, and craftsmanship. The result is a truly new PRS instrument that embodies the PRS Private Stock culture of meticulous workmanship as well as Mayer’s keen eye for playability, tone, and detail.

Some of the more distinctive and personalized specifications Mayer and Smith decided on for this special run of instruments include a longer (for PRS) scale length of 25.375”, specially-wound 58/15 JM treble and bass pickups with a specially-wound Narrowfield JM pickup in the middle position (with three individual coil-tap mini-switches), a JCF Audio preamp with treble boost, as well as a hand-signed sticker in the f-hole of the guitar that was designed by Mayer’s friend David Smith (who also designed the cover art for Mayer’s 2012 Born and Raised album). The pickups deliver a bright, clear tone that has been heard in venues across the USA in Mayer’s recent performances with Dead & Company.

But according to Mayer, this guitar won’t stop with Dead & Company. “Paul and I worked very closely to create this guitar, and the result is an incredibly refined and elegant instrument. It has a completely new sound and spirit. It's been a joy to play and I'm excited to share that experience with other guitar players” - John Mayer.

Ha. I wish. Man that would be great. I have always wanted an HBii but that thing blew my brain when JM brought it out the first time. I didn't even try to find a a price on that beauty. I've been too scared to look.

I think with envelope filters you get what you pay for. I'll get a 3Leaf Wonderlove one day.

If it's a Jerry-based approach I would want it to have the "down" direction envelope (for the Dancing In the Streets type effect). The DOD 440 is about the cheapest that does it, but it's not the best sounding filter (I enjoy mine). Can't go wrong with a QTron+ (pretty sure Mayer used that one for Dead and Co).

I ordered a Maxon af-9 for the cheap and will give it a try. I let you guys know.

Roll Tide!

i use a Mu-Fx from Beigel Soundlab ....but I just caused a problem on my amp because I had the level too high. I am not 100% sure what the problem is, but I definitely need to get the amp fixed now..first I'm going to change the tubes, but if that doesn't fix it, I've got a bigger problem.

and I am also a deadhead! Just saw Phil lesh last night in Port Chester NY, and Bob Weir 2 weeks ago in brooklyn. Love the new Dead and Co with Mayer really owning it. Saw an MSG show, a Citi field show and a Fenway park show. Looking forward to summer tour next year!

I have a Tru-Tron 3X (and MXR M82, but that's for bass), but before I got the Tru-Tron, I was seriously thinking of getting the Source Audio one -- would that have worked? I realize I'm coming from an entirely different direction, I don't really know what "that Jerry Estimated tone" is.

So If I was a dead head and interested in that Jerry tone, would my original bonestock, electrically plugged in Mutron III do the trick?? I have an ancient 1973 one that I stopped using in about 1975 and put in a drawer and it's been there pretty much since. It moved to Hawaii with me. I got in so much trouble with the then wife at the time for buying it. It was 120 bucks in 73!! I spent the household money for the week on it, she never realized I would make it back up that weekend of playing, but whoo, was she pissed!!!!! Alas, I won't be chasing Jerry tone anytime soon...;-)
