So the opportunity just arose to pick up a McCarty HBII w/Piezo used for 1800.00 Comes with case, but not OHSC, and no tags, case candy but is apparently signed by Paul on the back of the headstock in black marker. The guitar is basically the same as mine except it has the Piezo and bird inlays and I paid the same amount for it only new back in 2010. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance

Not an expert. Depends upon condition, whether it is a 10 top or artist package. I would assume it is an older one. If newer, the upgraded pickups (inc piezo) and finish are a big plus (IMO). A non original case is a minus.

Yeah, that's a Spruce Hollowbody, essentially the same as mine (I have a 2006), except you have birds. I can't make out the serial number on that one shot, but it won't be any more recent than 2007-ish.

$1800 is a fair price if it had the case, IMHO, but without the case I would want a lower price. The Spruce HBs are not common in the market place, so their track record is all over the place, but _generally_ they go for a little less than the HB I or HB II equivalents.

With piezo and birds that adds about $300 or so to the model you have, and prices have certainly changed (gone up) since 2010 (that's four years!). I assume your guitar came with a case for the price you paid back then.

That case is clearly a sticking point for me. The HB really needs the added protection of a good hard shell case, and that one fits like a glove...

I dunno, I'd be interested to find out why no case - it is useless for anything but another PRS HB, AFAIK.

Ok, keep in mind I'm also not a collector though too. It does come with a case, just not the one that it came with and, sadly, it does not come with the hang tag. I know this is generally a big deal for mainly collectors.

I guess I would want to make sure the case being used is "good enough" for the guitar. The OHSC is really well done, IMHO, but maybe the third-party case that you'll be getting is just as good. Yeah, I don't care for hang-tags etc either - I'm a player, not a collector.

I ended up passing on it a half hour ago for 3 reasons. I asked what kind of case they were going to give me and they wanted me to pay first before finding out the case. I said no, I'll wait. Glad I did. the guy was like, well, I can give you a case for a Custom 24, it kind of fits if I push hard enough... I'm like, uhm, no, I know that doesn't fit that guitar properly what the hell is wrong with you. So he says he'll call me back. He then says his manager said to not even give me a case, but to give me a gig bag and that 'well, it does have a piezo so it's still worth the money.' Yea, no proper case, and no hang tags (once again, that really doesn't matter to me, but still). So I said no thanks, not worth it for the extra 300 I would have to spend on a proper OHSC for it. HC Hollywood has morons working for them...

Ugh. that sucks.

There are some goons in there. I helped a buddy pick out a used Martin at that location and they tried to screw him on the case. It was a uniquely shaped/sized small body (concert?) with a cutaway... tag clearly said OHSC. They brought out a flimsy, papery, non-brand case that was way too big (dreadnaught sized). They said they "couldn't find it among the hundreds of cases downstairs". We called ********, made them go down and find a proper Martin case for that guitar. The clerk (kid) was a prick about it too. Not a well run location. Too bad because I had some great service there in the past. Now prefer the West LA store (know the manager, good guy).

Unless they knocked off $150-200 AND made the gig bag the new Mono one for semi-hollows, you are better off for having walked away. Who needs that sort of attitude?

Sorry for being a bit thick this morning, but "HC" = ??

And is that Hollywood, FL, or Hollywood, CA? Just curious...

Good decision on passing it up. The OHSC is very good for this guitar, and I'd never just slap it into any other random case. Store sounds like a bunch of jerks. Oh well, someone else will walk in and buy it without knowing any better, unfortunately.

wow, your a real stickler for a typo huh. 'GC' Hollywood, CA. There isn't one in Hollywood, FL, that's Hallendale. I hate going to that store but only do because they are an Á Store' and have better gear. I'm sure some unknowing soul will come in and buy the guitar though not knowing how badly it's been manhandled by idiotic store staff.

I've purchased one guitar from GC Hallandale. They were great, like most GCs from my experience. However, the Hollywood GC has been nothing but a pain. It's stores like Hollywood that give GC a bad name.

Not being a stickler, I just thought it was a store I wasn't familiar with - at first I thought of Harmony Central, but they aren't a retailer....

OK, makes sense now if it was Guitar Center. Sorry, didn't mean to offend...
