Just got this custom 24-08 a few days ago in flame smokeburst. I'm looking for everybody's thoughts on if this is a flaw in the stain (you'll know what I'm talking about in the pics, it's quite apparent) or if it's normal and I should just accept it and be happy. To me it looks out of place and I'm hoping it won't lower the resale value (not that I want to, it's an otherwise absolutely beautiful guitar)

First , it's a natural result of the varying porosity of the wood , and why we like figured woods. Think of it as a character line...

As far as re-sale/value ..picky collectors (guilty! here) prefer a bookmatched top . IMO I think it's always more pleasing if they are regardless of "flaws" .

It doesn't effect the tone or playabiliy so really doesn't matter much . In a market that thinks artificial relics are cool , it's questionable how detrimental that would be.

I think some people want perfection. Les’s DGT is my measure of a finish. So I wouldn’t be excited about that one. On the other hand, my SSH ten top has some darker areas. If finish matters, I would buy from that guy Les uses. Then convince Les to share the dirt he has on the guy that seems to guarantee Les always gets a great guitar shipped…

Yeah I don't think the dark line is what bothers me so much as the fact it's so polarizing compared to the other side. If it was book matched I think it would blend nicer

just a historical luthier tidbit .. One of the reasons the opaque edged "sunburst" finishes were used was to hide grain inconsistencies.. now just imagine a dark edged sunburst on your beauty .. you'd never see the "flaw " ... or one could always do a simple darker tint respray to make one ...
