I was doing a string change on my Special 22 and pulled the pickups out as I wanted a peak at the writing inside. I had a hunch that something didn’t add up with this guitar as it’s a solid black top with a stained neck which I’ve never seen before.

The tag in the bridge pickup cavity has some hand written notes as it looks like the build was changed on the fly. There’s also the word “top” with a black marker mark next to it. My guess is this was a 10 top that was supposed to be finished in charcoal like the neck but something happened and it ended up with a sweet black top instead.

That's interesting...and Holy Hell! I love that guitar!

It's a Wood Library run?

Thanks! Yes it’s a wood library run from Eddies. It taunted me for a few months and I finally caved in. According to Brett at Eddies, he tried to do another wood library run with solid tops and stained maple necks and PRS wouldn’t do it, so this guitar is truly a one off outside of a private stock order.

That thing just begs for pickup rings that match the back!!

I'd ALMOST pay for it just to have that image in my mind!!!!

Feel free to send some swamp ash pickup rings my way! ;)

Is it just me or do the initials on the left of the tag say PRS?

Man that's really cool. PRS should definitely allow those on future WL runs.

They probably found some cosmetic flaw in the top that kept it from being the grade they intended. I know from hearing Paul talk long ago that they would sometimes change the stain color if something in the top "surprised" them when it was cut and carved, or just put an opaque color on it. Why waste an otherwise fine piece of wood?
