One of my favorite movies ever is the 1951 classic, The Day The Earth Stood Still. It was the precursor to every later science fiction aliens movie.

I decided to create my own 1950s-influenced score for my imaginary remake. Hey, this is what I like to do when I have time on my hands. :)

Beautiful Les, as always.

I went back and listened to some more of your work, you truly are talented.

Everyone's talented!

I think the main challenge we all face is being patient enough to stick with something when the learning curve makes it difficult, or even boring. I love writing music, so I've stuck with it enough to get through some of the more boring parts, like learning a little orchestration theory along the way. And when I say, "a little orchestration theory," I mean "just enough to prove to myself that I know nothing of orchestration theory!"

Here's the thing: I'm OK at composing, but I'm not great at it. I waited too long to learn how to do it well. The older you get, the less patience and mental flexibility you have to learn things like music theory well enough that they become second nature. Regrets. But there's no going back, so I just push ahead. :)

Awesome as always Les!

I totally agree with the age thing. My only regret about learning guitar is, waiting so long to pick one up. Playing is hands down the best thing I've done for myself. However, I get what your saying about the mental flexibility and having the patience. I will say though, it has helped me tremendously with focus and being 100% committed to the process. I really don't think I would have stuck with it to the level I'm able to now at a younger age. So there is that.

Keep all the good stuff coming our way. Your creations are always inspiring!

It needs more theremin. I have a fever, a fever for theremin.
That was my thought before even clicking on the link!

Very cool - @LSchefman ! I love the tension build and then the kind of distorted collapse at the end.

I definitely heard something kind of oscillating and throbbing in there - tucked in so as not to scream "I'm a theremin" or "I'm an analog synth".

I actually used Universal Audio's Luna Moog plugin to emulate the theremin, and it was a little too thick to use more. A real theremin would have been better for sure!
My old band featured a theremin the keyboard player made himself. Only the pitch antenna worked (no volume control) so it was good for woopy special effects mostly.

We did write this song around it. As far as composition and theory goes, this has the teeniest bit - it's a palindrome in that the song sections are played one way into the bridge and then reversed coming out of it: ABCABCDEFEDCBACBA.

I'm the singer/bassist.

Shoulda been called “The Adventures of Thurmin Munson” :p

Nice Les! That could be used in all kinds of film... it made me think of some of the underwater scenes in The Abyss. If we ever get together, I’m bringing the Axe Fx III for you to play with. Some great ambient sounds in there for you to add to your creations!
