Folks, we need your opinion regarding the hosting of photos for the Private Stock Friday thread. We are trying to decide whether or not to host PSF images as an attachment (stored on the PRS server) or keep trying to use an external hosting services like PhotoBucket, Flickr, etc. which has been problematic.

The advantage of attaching images is that the data doesn't go away when the host account is nuked by the owner or when there are other glitches with the host site. It also seems to circumnavigate firewall problems some people run into. Not everyone can see the images hosted via Flickr, PhotoBucket, etc. Most people can always see attached images.

The downside is that images appear as a small thumbnail which you have to click to enlarge.

Here is a sample attachment. Click it!

The poll expires in 3 days.

Couldn't vote at first... :dontknow:

I voted for 'Shawn Is The Man'. Appreciate the time he takes to do this each week so whatever makes it easier for Shawn to do this is fine by me.

Thinking a little more selfishly then I think I prefer the external host option as it's nice to see larger images straight away...

Actually... Scrap that. Did you change it Hans... Sure the other image was smaller but that one once clicked on is a good size...

I think the external hosts are too problematic these days. Photobucket is a mess and Flick (Which used to be good) has been left to the dogs by Yahoo.

I think i'm going to side with using attachments for now. The extra steps a little bit of a pain but at least we know they'll be viewable. My only recommendation would be to use the 1020 x 768 resolution so the pics are a good size once clicked.

it does look like the file size will need reducing massively for attachments though. That's another step for Shawn which means more time potentially...

So if it's easier for Shawn to upload to a host then that's best overall perhaps...

I say host them. Definitely should be less problematic. If we are too lazy to click on a thumbnail, then shame on us.

Shawn is The Man, period! And The PRivate Stock Friday is already a classic. so what ever makes those beauties in the air I am in! thanx for asking

No, that's automatic. The vBulletin software creates the thumbnail when the larger image is attached. If anything, it's less steps for Shawn because it's computer to thread instead of uploading to Picasa, Photobucket, etc. and then copying/pasting the hyperlink with HTML tags into the thread.

Ah right... So is there no limit to the file size of the attachment? That would definitely make it easier.

IIRC, there is a way to attach the pics that doesn't use the thumbnails, but it might take up more server space. They use it on another board I frequent. But how it works is above my pay grade...

I moderate on another forum and we add pictures as attachments and they don't show as thumbnails but as pictures. I personally prefer it that way. 1200 x 1600 is the maximum allowed there. It doesn't bother me to click on a thumbnail either.

New VB software should allow a bigger pic embedded right in the thread, or there is a plugin for it at vb.org

Problem with Photobucket since their upgrade, my Kindle Fire no longer shows them.

I have completely forgotten what this thread is about. All I know at this point is "SHAWN IS THE MAN". haha jk

We could adjust the thumbnail size so it looks like an attachment. I'll ask James (our Admin) to alter it or give me the ability to do so if the poll turns out in favor of attachments.

For now, those voting should plan on the image remaining in thumbnail format.

I think that's how ours works.

My concern is that it would double the memory required if the thumbnail (auto-generated) is the same size as the original file.

It's important that everyone vote on the assumption that thumbnail sizes will remain the same.

Yes, the attachment is limited by file size but that is adjustable.

OK, didn't know that. IF I've added attachments on forums in the past the size of the resolution and actual file size used to be tiny. Adjustable... Sounds like the way to go! :)
