Identifying Neck Carve from the Heel - What's the Secret?

Curious. How would one learn the skill? A tech had a guitar of mine in, flipped it over and said "Ahhhh a regular profile huh?" Without even holding the neck itself yet or looking under the cavities.

Well, in the early days, when Customs had the smaller heel, I could tell if it was a wide thin or regular neck carve, because the size of the neck heel was smaller on the W/T necks.
What year is the guitar you are talking about?
