Thinking about do a refin on my OG NF3 body. It’s black, it’s eloquent, it’s boring me. I love the guitar. I doubt PRS would do what I want so it’ll lose value having someone else do it. I’ve been looking at Fender Custom Shop strats hanging in stores. Doing this could prevent me from buying a guitar I don’t really like(strats).

Let’s talk colors. I like Inca silver, shoreline gold, PRS colors closest maybe platinum. I kind of really like the SS color midnight rose.

Now for the most controversial part. Might do a finishing checking lacquer topcoat like this. https://www.stewmac.com/luthier-too...y-job/tools-for-finishing/gluboost-lac-r-shot

If your NF3 finish is the same as my Brent Mason Signature, it might be easy to relic as is. My finish seems to dent and crack pretty easily. If you can tolerate the black, you might just skip the refinish and go straight to distressing.

You love the guitar. Sounds like a keeper.

You don't like the color and don't say anything about worrying about the time needed or the result of the refinish.

Do it. Make it yours. Something that inspires you to pick it up & play.

I’d try for something close to midnight rose. If I couldn’t find the right colour, shoreline gold.

Not sure about the checking from a can. I would probably spray it on the black to see how I liked what it did. Then do the new colour. Rechecking if I liked how it worked the first time.

I have no experience refinishing guitars, but I am thinking of those guitars that got sprayed over the original finish with a new color that eventually wore away. Maybe instead of taking down to the bare wood, you do a light sanding of the black and spray over it.

My Initial Hesitation On Anything Like This Is Can The New Job Be Done Right And Look Professional? If Yes Then I Think It Would Be Great To Transform Something That Is So So To You Into Something You Could Really Love. To Me, It Makes No Sense To Ever Get Rid Of A Good Playing Guitar Over Color So Again, Another Point For Making It A Color You Love. What I Think Would Be A Bummer Is If The Job Itself Wasn't Done Right And Came Out Terrible And Was A Poor Quality Job. If You Or Somebody You Know Can Pull Off A Professional Refinish I Say Go For It!

Whatever you choose, go for it! My idea would be to get an artist (like tatoo artist or auto pin stripe artist) do some cool stuff over the black!! And if you don't like it, strip it and paint it whatever color you like!!! Maybe just some stickers to bring it alive for you if you don't want to go the artist route ;~))

Seems like a lot of trouble.

On the other hand, every time I look at that 20th PS Anniversary model with the Northern Lights finish I think, "If only it was Tiger eye" or something similar.

On the other, other hand, it'd be expensive trouble to refin it.
