I Love This Forum But….

In addition to being a luthier and a regular old guitar freak, I am a software developer and enterprise architect during the day and I know what the requirements of hosting pics on the site are. There is a cost associated with storage and an enlarged footprint (I assume the host is cloud based, AWS or Azure maybe?). If cost is the prohibitive factor then maybe we could monetize certain features of the site to offset the cost. Or maybe PRS could enable this feature on the site as a show of appreciation to those of us who buy their expensive instruments and who have supported them for almost 40 years now. There are many ways to look at it but it would be nice to have this ability on what is an otherwise excellent forum.

I mean, copy-and-paste Julie Bowen does have an awfully nice ring to it.

Time to make a potentially useful and relevant contribution here, yes I know, don't all faint at once!
There is the server load to consider when a forum hosts its own photos rather than let the cloud do the heavy lifting.
On the Roon forum we had quite a number of mega threads with 3 to 4000 posts with a huge number of hosted photos.
Consider that these threads were visited numerous times daily by multiple people and you have an immense load on the servers.
We ended up ( the Mod team) taking all threads that had 1000 plus posts and splitting out the most recent 100 or so and creating new threads and then archiving the old remainders. So now the current viewing thread was very small and a lot less heavy lifting to be done.
Now I don't know if this would ever be an issue here as not many mega threads and new threads come and go quickly here but I also don't know the state of PRS servers and to host their own pictures might mean an upgrade would be needed, I doubt it but you never know.

Ok I'm going back to find the corner to stand in of this round room the nice gentleman with the white coat led me into.....

Aside from all the technical concerns and such, there is one big factor here that argues against changing the picture posting process.

PRS is a guitar company. Their time, energy, and money is far better spent building guitars than maintaining a forum. You'd likely need at least one full-time person, maybe two (at minimum), which is two less positions available for the guitar business. And any additional cost is also going to take away from that.

I was not involved when this forum was set up, but my understanding is that several people really went to bat for us to convince the company to set this up when Birds And Moons went belly up. (And for the record, you couldn't paste pictures directly to BaM, either.)

Because this is an abandoned mall that we’re all just loitering in.

Yes, but they left some Chick-Fil-A behind.

And as long as the power is on, we can still play Q*bert.

It Is Not As If PRS Is Understaffed At Making Guitars. If They Were, They Would Hire Somebody In An Instant. I Can Guarantee You That The Person Making Guitars Is Not The Same Person That Would Be Involved, IF An Employee Was Involved, In Assisting With This Forum. It Is Not Like Either "Employee" Is Raking In Massive Cash As A Wage. B&M Was Nearly 2 Decades Ago And The Whole Marketing And Communicating World Has Changed Since Then. There Are Several Ways "Forum Membership And Privileges" Could Be Tied Together To Prevent Inappropriate Things From Being Posted. Some That Quickly Come To Mind Are Minimum Time As A Member And Post Count Needing To Be Met In Order To Post Photos And If They Are Worried About Sock Accounts Membership Code Can Be Given When You Register Your Warranty Card Or something Like That. Kemper Does Something Similar And It Works Like A Charm. Who Handles The Social Media And Marketing For PRS Now? This Forum Isn't That Busy And Les And I Are The Only Assh@le$ Here So There Shouldn't Be Any Problems.;)
