I love the Wide/Fat neck on my SE 245, will I like a Pattern neck on a core guitar?

Pretty much as the title says. I do not like very chunky necks. I disliked the 594's neck for this reason. I love the Wide/Fat neck on my SE 245 though. It doesn't feel too chunky to me and has an ergonomic feel that I enjoy.

However, if that neck was a bit bigger, I bet I wouldn't be able to enjoy it as much.

So I was wondering if I love the Wide/Fat neck on my SE 245, will I like a Pattern neck on a core guitar, as it's supposedly the same/very similar thing?

I like:
-The Wide/Fat neck on my SE 245. Surprised that I liked it, since it's not a thin neck.
-Most thin necks

Dislike:
-594's Vintage Pattern neck (too chunky and odd feeling). Had to sell my great sounding 594 because of this.
-Baseball bat necks

I feel like the SE W/F necks are a little bigger and with more variation than with Core guitars, at least with the ones I own. But yeah, I think you’ll like it.

The only meaningful answer will be the one your hands determine.

If you’d asked the same question about the 594 neck, I’d have guessed you'd love It, because it’s the most comfortable guitar neck I’ve ever played, the Pattern necks on my other guitars feel every bit as chunky, if not chunkier, and I dug the old wide-fat necks as well.

You need to go try some, or just get one with a thin neck, and call it a day.

So to you the Pattern and Vintage Pattern feel equally as chunky? This is the first time I've heard this. Thought that Vintage Pattern was thicker than Pattern.
Unfortunately, I don't have the option of trying them out.

The Pattern neck on my 20th Private Stock Anniversary Ltd., directly comparable because it is the 594 scale length with a Pattern carve, feels every bit as chunky, if not chunkier, than the ones on my 594s. However, they’re a different type of chunky, because the shapes are not the same. PRS has a chart showing cross-sections of the neck types on their main website.

If you prefer thinner necks, and can’t try them, seems to me that caution would dictate getting Pattern Thin, but my general feeling is that you’re playing guessing games regardless until you play one.

“My size 11 D Gucci loafers are really comfy. Will I like size 12 C Nikes?”

Um...maybe?

Yeah, I seem to be a bit confused now, so I'd best go with Pattern thin and call it a day. Thanks!

I don't find a whole lot of difference between Pattern and Pattern Vintage. I think it depends on your hand and your technique, though. For a thumb-wrapper like me, I say the Vintage adds extra meat in just the right place to fill my palm without making the neck feel too big.

Like Sergio said, there's more variation on the SE guitars. The SE Soapbar II I owned had a huuuge Wide/Fat. The SE One I have now feels slimmer than I remember Wide/Fat being on other guitars.

It seems you would like the Pattern Regular neck on the S2 and on some CU24 guitars. It has the depth of Pattern, but a thinner nut width, which makes it very comfy.

You gotta get 'em in your hand to know for sure, though.

Hmmm. I don’t think you will like Pattern if you sold a guitar with Pattern Vintage. I love SE guitars but cannot get along with the Wide Fat necks because they are too wide but not thick enough...so they feel too wide and too thin to me. Weirdly, I get along just fine with Pattern and Pattern Vintage. I detect very minor differences between the two shapes.

You might like it though. If you cannot get your hands on it, because there seems to be high probability that it will be too thick, I’d advise looking for a Pattern Thin to be safe.

Pattern Regular would be my recommendation. The measurable difference is small but it feels VERY different.

I want my core SC245 to have a Pattern Vintage neck carve on it like my two McCarty 594's. I'm tempted to buy a bunch of sandpaper and go to town on it.

As it just so happens, I am the owner and founder of a 594 rescue service. Anyone who doesn't like the 594's should give them to me where I will insure that they will all be well cared for and live a happy life.

I think the short response is “yes.”

Side note: I had two PRSi out the other night, and while I like both necks, I did discover that I prefer a pattern over a pattern vintage. Different strokes......

I also think the WF on the SE I played was a bit bigger than WF on Core or my PS guitars. I do think if you like WF on your SE you will like Pattern on a Core. I say that without any reservation unless you are ultra picky about necks.

In case you hadn’t seen that. However I have a 594, a mccarty, and an SE245. Imo the neck on the 594 “feels” smaller than the wide fat on the other two guitars. I know it’s technically bigger, but the asymmetric carve just feels so right. That said I like a chunky neck, and because of that I get these “Oh yeah that’s what I’m talking about,” moments when playing the wide fats. When I play the pattern vintage I simply don’t think about the neck. It just disappears in my hand.

All of that to say, it’s all about technique, personal preference, and anatomy. What feels great to me may not to you. And each guitar is going to be a little different.

And to keep on going. I think pattern regular might be your happy place.
