I was in the mood for a little project and found this 2007 Tremonti SE. No pickup rings, mounting screws, switch tip or bridge. It has USA pickups and an immaculate SE gig bag, so that's pretty cool. I happened to have an extra SE bridge and some pickup mounting screws/springs laying around, so I figure for about $10 and a little bit of time I can make this baby a player again.

It photographs well, but man this thing was dirty! Doesn't anyone take care of their stuff? The nut on the output jack was missing, so I used spare parts to put it back in. The washer on the switch was corroded, so I replaced it. My first thought was "rode hard and put away wet" because it also has quite a lot of small scratches and dings, but after polishing, the frets are immaculate! There's hardly a divot. I now think it got knocked around more than it got played.

I haven't seen chrome plating wear this way before:

Looks like it took a pretty good knock. I'm already working on filling the chip. I'm thinking of maybe using a silver paint pen to color it?

The for sale ad said the logo had faded. That didn't sound right, since I know the logos are under the finish and it looked more like Sharpie to me.

Well, that was easy. A little bit of rubbing with a blue shop towel and voila!

I had a cream metric switch tip laying around, so I put it on for kicks. I actually like the look of the cream tip, as it matches the binding. Thinking of going for cream mounting rings instead of black like you usually see on Platinum Metallic. Any opinions?

Bangin'! Cream all the way. I'd head to Ulta and look for some nail polish for the chip.

I hope PRSh is perusing these threads. If we could just get some PRSi with VOS or aged finishes, we would all be so happy!

Fixed that for ya.

Just play yours until it really is aged, and you're in business. Or buy some brillo pads and get busy.

Funny you mentioned that. Last night as I was perusing the web for pics of silver PRS guitars, I went on a tangent after seeing a silver topped 408 one-off that totally blew my mind, which led me down the rabbit hole of looking for a 408 stoptail. I stumbled upon a 408 that someone had given the relic treatment. Massive finish checking, dulled hardware, tons of chips on the edges; the whole nine. :bawling:

Glad I'm not alone on the cream pickup rings. I probably wouldn't do it without the cream binding. The binding takes it to a different place, visually. I'm very interested in how this puppy sounds. I'm really digging the beveled top and the thinner-than-a-core-Singlecut body. I feel like this is a gateway drug to an S2.

Thanks for the nail polish tip. So far I've done two layers of wood glue to start filling it up and to stabilize the chip. There's a section of finish along the damage that was loose, and would double the size of the chip if it came off. I don't have any delusions of getting it perfect, but my goal is to get it relatively smooth and decently color matched so it doesn't stand out so much. It's gotta look better than an exposed chunk of mahogany, right?

I hope at least SOME of my sarcasm came through!! Darned interweb!

I much prefer my PRSi nice and glossy.

Now where are those razorblades. I have some modding to do...

Does it involve the aforementioned Brillo pad?
Nope!!

Sorry! I need to get my humor gene together!

...aaand we have a player!

This thing is a beast. I really like the Tremonti pickups so far. Nice and clear vintagey neck, super ballsy bridge and yet they match very well. Another winner of an SE.

I'll have to get some better pics once the weather gets a little better and I attempt to touch up the paint chip.
