I have sinned against PRS again - NGD

I have a Thinline and it's beyond great. But it's NOT an SG....And of course it isn't going to turn me into a phenom like Grace Bowers (even if I was a young pretty lady) but it's one of those intangible wants that doesn't seem to go away. I don't care that I don't own a LP or an American Strat, they actually do nothing for me or pull at my heart strings that way. But the SG does somehow...very similar to what the PRS does when I see one that just makes me weak in the knees.
Which is how I ended up in this place to start with.😂
Buy what you want and what inspires you, who cares what anyone else thinks about it. (I wouldn't buy any Gibson unless you can return it or play it first, though.)

The SG is basically a simpler construction DC Les Paul (Even called a Les Paul when it was created in '61) that is usually 2-3lbs lighter and it's worked for a lot of people from Robby Kreiger to Frank Zappa to Angus Young and most importantly... Tony Iommi. With simpler construction, there are less things for Gibson to muff up in the manufacturing process, which is a good thing. Get one.

The only guitar I’ve ever regretted selling was an SG.
I still have the 1965 SG. Or should I say, now my son is its caretaker.

I stopped playing it altogether when I got my first PRS. I never missed it for one second.

By the way, in addition to Krieger, Angus and Iommi, Carlos Santana was known for being an SG player. I guess he got rid of his when he discovered PRS, too. :D

Ah, Woodstock...SG Special.

I think I mostly regret it because I really sold it for no reason.

It wasn’t like my other Gibson’s where I totally sold them for reasons.

SGs are nice, but the weight of a Les Paul is the key factor in a Gibson in my humble opinion.
One of them for sure. But there's other considerations too (for me anyway). But there's still that headstock angle on the SG (very similar to the LP) that I don't like. Although I have to admit I've never had one of my similar shaped guitars tip/fall over and snap the headstock so maybe I'm making a mountain out of a molehill on that account. I do know if I ever do pick one up it won't be a new one, would be strictly a decent (immaculate?) condition used machine for me.
Of course that's what say now...🙄

It gets violated, but there is a rule. This is PRS' house, and the forum is run on their nickel, after all, but obviously they're giving you a wide berth - maybe it's because you wear a derby!

"6. Keep it PRS

We're a PRS specific forum, so please try to keep gear talk PRS-centric."
I’ll stand on d@mn soapbox with ya for a second…

Back in the day, nobody had a problem bending the rule if they tied it to PRS. Let’s be honest - there’s dozens of ways to do it. Comparison to PRS. Through your PRS amp, cable, pedal, etc. Your PRS through some other product. I could keep going but you get the idea. If it were something PRS didn’t offer, nobody complained about that either. It’s not my forum, so I’m not going to die on this hill. I no longer care enough to even mention it most of the time. This is PRS’s house. That’s why we’re here. The only reason this place exists. There’s a bunch of other forums to discuss all the other brands and get stroked for your new toy of those brands. I get that most people here prefer the company of the members here, like I said there’s plenty of ways to bend and not break. There’s plenty of non PRS stuff I like talking about. If I want to praise the virtues of it with those here, I’m tying it to the ownership’s brand somehow. With all due respect.

Excellent point. There's bends and then there's [outside] the box....

Blasphemy? My first love is my 2000 gibson les paul! Have many a les paul in my current stable but my prs count is quickly catching up! Lol

Good excuse here:
PRS, the human, made his first guitar as a college project the year before I got my LP. Back then an LP was the only option. It's still the solo Gibson among the multiple PRSi now.

Let’s remember that Paul’s design is a homage to two well known guitar brands
Yes, homage in a way to two guitar brands, known for the models they produced 20-30 years before PRS got going (during the very low quality production years for both brands you're referring to, Fender-CBS and Gibson-Norlin).

I'm not sure they were the same companies back then, in spirit if not in fact.

and one model is named after a key figure from one of those brands.
That key figure was on record as being unhappy that no one from Gibson ever contacted him after he left to find out how things were done in the glory years, after Gibson-Norlin lost their way.

Everyone's got an ego, but the advice he gave Paul Smith made PRS a better, smarter company whose products certainly outperformed what the other two were making at the time. I get that Gibson and Fender have since improved.
I don’t think there is any disrespect meant here. However as has been said:

“Their house, their rules”
Si fueris Romae, Romano vivito more; si fueris alibi, vivito sicut ibi.

"If you're in Rome, live in Roman fashion; if you're elsewhere live as there."

"OK, but you're not in Ancient Rome."

"History teaches that Western vivito more is in no small part based in the precepts of Ancient Rome. We just drive cars instead of being carried around by slaves on litters to avoid stepping in animal dung."

"What if you were a slave back then?"

"Your feet got awfully dirty and smelly, I guess."

"Ewww."

"Just pick up your end of the litter and quit complaining."

That was such a great movie.

"You never watched it all the way through!"

"I didn't need to because I memorized the entire history of the era."

"The, uh, movie wasn't history, see, it was satire."

"But the Latin..."

"Was spoken with a British accent! Do you think the Romans had British accents?"

"I'm certain the Roman citizens in Britannia had British accents, anyway."

"The question is whether the British accent would today be as it is if it hadn't been for the Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Danes who arrived after the Romans left and undoubtedly influenced the way the language is spoken, and then throw Norman French on top of everything else. Got an answer for that, smart ass?"

"Yes. Prove me wrong."

"Well of course I can't."

"The defense rests."

"OK, go rest, but you'd better be rested by dawn or I'll cut your balls off."
