I have made a momentous decision

Or, you know, not really.

Anyway, I am a HUGE Black Crowes fan. I love the Crowes, I love every album, even Lions...actually, Shake Your Money Maker is my LEAST favorite, but it's still dang good...but you get the idea. I love me some Crowes. Rich's tone, in particular, is an absolute benchmark to me as to what the guitar should sound like. Marc Ford's no slouch in the tone department either, nor is anyone who has played with them. Rich's, though, is particularly magical IMO.

That said, I know how to play very few Crowes tunes - because Rich primarily plays in Open G, and I never want to sit down and figure it out. Seems like a pain.

Finally, today, I have decided it's time - just tweaked Daisy's setup, and she's now my Open G machine. I decided on Daisy because, as the solid body Vela, she has that touch more bite and twang. Lends itself closer to Rich's tone as he tends to play Teles fairly often, though he plays freaking everything....but I also figure her tone will be slightly better for slide as well, if I end up going down that road.

So that's it - my Velas now have split purposes, with Melinda in Standard and Daisy now singing in Open G.

Their work has kinda reminded me of Sticky Fingers-era Rolling Stones.

This is a compliment, not a criticism. I've always felt that SF was a ground-breaking record, and it's good to see that gold vein being worked.

Funny, I remember when Black Crowes were pretty new, and someone said "They need to tell these guys that Led Zeppelin rock is over"! What that person was not taking into account is, some people are going to like that style until the day they die, and the fact that Mr. Page decided to more or less be a part of that band for a while does nothing but reinforce the quality of what they are doing!! So I totally agree, work that gold vein, there are still some alive who are committed to that ore!!!

On a brighter note, alternate tunings are a wonderful excuse for having multiple guitars!

I must confess that I have a certain embarrassment in being old enough to have listened to Sticky Fingers starting the day it was released, learning all the songs on the record in a couple of days, and now realizing I can no longer remember how to play any of them.

All I can say about life is, "Geez, that went by quickly."

I enjoy open g at times..especially “ She Talks To Angels”

I used the tuning “ excuse “ for another guitar….

I use open E for this tune...incorrectly I guess.

Never messed with open G. Be interesting to see where this goes Ahazz.

Well thanks for that confirmation! Years ago my guitar teacher and I figured it out (no internet then!!) so that's the way I play it, never knew if it was correct or not. He had a way of figuring stuff out that was amazing. I ended up with a baby boy about a year later because of this song and the reason I learned it. She DID talk to Angels man!

Sorry Ahazz, open G is the theme on this thread!

I'm a huge fan of the Crowes. Got to see them live in '08 when the Warpaint album came out. I loved that album. I really like Lions too (Cosmic Friend anyone?). They were so much fun and stripped down. They had no opening band nor did they have a huge production. When it was time to play, the lights went down, and they just walked out and started rocking. 2 hours of bluesy, rock, gospel goodness.

That was at the time when Luther Dickinson was with them. Unfortunately, crazy ol' Ed wasn't on that tour. That was the only bummer imo.

..... and playing in open G is a lot of fun. You can definitely pull off a lot of Crowes tuned that way.

It is. I always keep one of the guitars in open G.

As a tuning you will hear Richards' licks first, but if you keep playing with it there are all sorts of other things going on.

I played keyboards in bands during that era. The organ intro was devilishly finger-twisting for me then! It'd take a few days to be able to get it right again.
