I Felt A Great Disturbance In The Force As Though Millions Of Amps Suddenly Cried Out In Terror.

My downsizing thought of the day is that I might keep the DGT and the McCarty Singlecut as my two vintage-sounding guitars (I’m a vintage tones person), sell the more modern-sounding CU24 30th PS, and make amp decisions later, since all of my amps are based around more traditional amp tones.

I still need to ruminate on it a little.

It’s a process!

Edit: See post below, I’ll probably unload the Fillmore instead, in favor of the DG30.

Which is a good thing, because…

I just went into the studio and got every single tone I get with the Fillmore using the DG30, except the DG30 does them with greater clarity and dynamic range - for me, that’s better. The highest gain tones I get with the Fillmore I can also get with the HXDA in a very similar , and more useful-for-me, way.

So what I don’t need is the Fillmore. I’ll probably put that on Reverb if I still feel that way later.

The decision about the CU24 is officially postponed.
 
Solid plan
The main thing holding me back re: the Fillmore is all the time (and dough) I put into acquiring and rolling the NOS tubes that are in it. Of course I won’t pull them to sell, because of the way the sockets are mounted to the circuit boards instead of the chassis, and recessed so they’re extremely difficult to see to orient the pins correctly.

Even with the power tubes removed and the head upside down, you have to use a dental mirror to see how the preamp tube pins are lining up to the holes, because the enclosure is so shallow. You can pull the chassis, but that’s not something I do just to freaking change a tube.

It’s kind of a PITA. I don’t want to go through the hassle again right now.

I’ve got some Telefunkens 6L6s I’m going to install - the power tube sockets are easy to view because they’re chassis mounted. Maybe that will give me an interesting tone change.

I really hate circuit board-mounted tube sockets. It’s a cheap-ass way to go, and a big drawback with current Mesas (in my opinion, yet I have two Mesas built that way).
 
Today’s session. Played the HXDA clean as a whistle rolling the Master up almost all the way, and using the bridged gain controls old school for volume.

The tone was unbelievable.

I don’t think the Fillmore can touch it, clean, crunch or dirty.
 
I have to sell one of my amps. It’s down the the HXDA or the /13 EDT.
Goodness knows they’re both excellent amps. It’s not like they create the same tones and overlap. So you can’t just decide one amp sounds a little better at doing one thing.

For the things I play (mostly melodic lines where the notes benefit from the added support of a fuller low end), the HXDA is a better fit. That doesn’t make it more suitable for someone else.

Decisions, decisions!
