After seeing the film I scored about my brother on PBS - things always sound a little different on broadcast - I wondered if I could (a) improve the music quality for broadcast, and (b) do a better audio postproduction mix. So I set out to find out last weekend and felt good enough about it yesterday to post it.
After a few days' work, I think I made improvements to the score. The cello repeating phrase now starts a beat back from the violin phrases to create more interest; I 86'd the synth line in the beginning and replaced it with a cluster of low strings just rubbing against the strings with their bows slightly; I changed the music submix, and changed the post mix so that my brother's voice is less muddy and stands out a bit more.
Some of you saw the earlier version of this short film; let me know if anything is noticeable, and if so, whether you like the new version better.
I had to put my ego to the side and reduce the volume of the music vs voice-over to make this happen, but I'm happier with the outcome overall.
The score without picture is here; honestly, I think it's a nice piece of music on its own. It's more textural than a big melody, theme and variation. See if you agree.
