....because I know this topic has been kicked around many times, but I need help.

It appears Photobucket has really crashed and burned this time. They have been down a month, and have made the baseless assertion that most customers have been restored. I think they are lying to us, and I believe a surge caused our files to disappear. Just read customers responses on Facebook. BUT MY INTENT IN THIS THREAD IS NOT TO TRASH PHOTOBUCKET, since apparently they don’t need any help.

I need help deciding where to replace my photo storage. In order of importance, I’m looking for:

1. Something simple to use (I’m too damn old and stubborn to learn new tricks).
2. Something dependable (I really don’t want to stress and have learn a 3rd time).
3. Something cost effective (I’d rather spend $ on guitars).

Regarding #1, I’d like to be able to easily load into folders, link to websites, and have simple light, color, and cropping enhancements. I actually liked the old Photobucket better than the advanced version (Before Chernobyl obviously).

Check out SmugMug. It seems to meet all your requirements. I've been using it since the first photobucketapocalypse. No complaints.

Imgur seems to be the most popular alternative for people here. I’ll let them explain why.

The issue I always had with image hosting sites is that it was rarely clear what the financial model that would make them sustainable was. Since I didn’t feel it was a sure thing they would last, I got a simple web site. I just drop photos (or documents) in a folder and then link to them, as you would with any hosting service. I keep a copy of the entire site on my own computer so I have it if the server crashes, and so I can search it off line. I forget the cost, but it isn’t much for 10 gigabytes of space and 2 gigabytes/month bandwidth - my audience is small so that serves me fine.

I keep a folder for friends without a host, so if you want some photos up before you find a solution you are comfortable with, just email them to me and I’ll send you back a link(s).

I've known Don (the owner of Smug Mug) since before he started it, he's always been a good guy and he definitely knows what he's doing tech wise. If you want top notch hosting , and are ok with paying for it, that's definitely the way to go.

Imgur is nice, and free, but your photos will be degraded in quality (most people won't notice). Not sure how they make money, so long term could be iffy if they get bought out by someone that thinks they can turn them more profitable.

Imgur is my goto as well. I like that i can upload my images in private mode, and not have to share my carppy pictures with the entire world. (Just you guys and girls) And, as an added bonus the memes and other public images can be quite humorous when you need a diversion.

Yes to the “private” uploads! I didn’t understand that for the first week or so and got a pile of comments that I wasn’t expecting.

Imgur is where I went. I love having the app on my phone as it makes it way easy to take, upload, and post pics.... it’s also free.

Plus, there are random memes that I can use and don’t need to make, but if I want to, it’s quick and easy.
I'll have to try the app on my phone to see if it's a bunch easier.

You should, and it is.

I don’t know about you all but, Photobucket was like, a three step process for me. First I’d take a pic, then upload it to my computer from my phone, and then I’d upload it to the photo hosting site. This is still the same but, now it’s all done through my phone without having to go to my computer.

I opened an account at Imgur. How do you upload in private mode? I didn’t see an option.

I use Postimage on the suggestion of another forum member. Very easy and free.

I use Instagram for photo manipulation, mostly If I share a photo with you guys, I’ve put it on my account so I would’ve done the alterations anyway.

This is exactly how I do it, too. Well, at least the photo transferring part of it. Any activity in terms of posting to a thread, I do through a computer.

But taking the photos and uploading them to Imgur is all done through my phone. It's super easy.

Been using postimages.org for a few years. Will they survive? No idea. No editing, but fairly easy to use.

Another vote for Imgur. Simple and easy to use and I can keep my pics hidden which I really like. But...I also keep my photos backed up on a seperate hard drive so if Imgur ever pulls a photobucket I don't wind up losing everything or having them held for ransom.

Photobucket has been part of the broad and spacious highway for quite some time. Many end users have found that their online advertisements have been rife with malware, that bog down uploads and curtail normal use. But yes, Photobucket does need help, but they can't get it from external sources. They need to organize and clean house within before they can provide content for their clients. As with me, I sit here with a ton of paperwork and documents that need completion, and can't seem to get a break. That's really not the problem. Photobucket, however, is so bogged down with advertisement malware that their website has failed to deliver.

Here's your option:

Fast-forward: In principle: Imgur is a much easier to use interface, though you might need to learn how to add images to your account and create separate file databases for public or private view. That being said, it is necessary to upload images one at a time; there are no options for bulk uploads. Patience is therefore key, just as patience while waiting for a delayed package from FedEx is key.
