I've only learned in recent times that I shouldn't have done this!
I'm fairly certain that I loosened the string tension before doing so, and I was quite meticulous when it came to the actual adjustment; I tightened each screw by the same amount and was pleased with the overall result. Some 15 years later I still have excellent tuning stability, so hopefully I haven't done any damage.
Back then I was all about super low actions at the cost of some buzz and sustain, but I have noticed some undesireable consequences, especially when recording ultra clean guitar parts, so I wish to do two things -
Firstly, I wish to change from factory spec 9-42 to 10-46. Will 10s fit the nut without having to widen the slots in the nut?
Secondly, since I will have to set up the trem with the new gauge, I figured now is the best time to revert the guitar back to its intended action, so how best should I go about reverting it, to an accurate degree?
Any suggestions on where to start please? I'm planning on giving the guitar a very much needed overhaul in general, so any other set up tips are welcome too.
If it's helpful - the current state of the guitar is that the trem is pretty spot on, it's almost perfectly level, and a 1mm pick fits nicely between the bottom of the bridge and the body (when looking down at the guitar in playing position). All the screws do indeed appear to be set to the same height.
Thank you.
