Hi all, I’m new to the forum and I’ve never owned a prs. I have a 1996 Jackson PS4 Performer all original with the original case and someone would like to trade a 2010 PRS SE Mikael Akerfeldt for it straight across. It appears they’re similar in value on Reverb and I was wondering if anyone thought it was a bad trade

I don’t ever play the Jackson anymore, I got it new in 96 when I was a teen. I largely plays Gibson guitars these days. I’m an Opeth fan and thought maybe it would look good on the wall instead of the Jackson but if it’s a bad trade value wise I don’t wanna do it. I’d rather trade up than down and if it plays nice that would be a plus too

If it’s in good shape and you like the specs, it should be a great guitar. I have the Akesson and love it dearly.

The Akerfeld was a bit of a special instrument when it launched, unlike anything else in the line at the time. Twenty-four fret single cut with a thinner neck that was satin finished (the first SE to do this, I believe) Also, I think the pickups were the first iterations of the SE HFS and Vintage Bass pickups.

I was bummed afterward because I’ve had that Jackson a long time, but the SE Mikael Akerfeldt is a very nice guitar. I like the satin neck, it’s very nice. I’m a bit u happy because it came with a red colored PRS gigbag, I guess I’ll be on the search for a hard case that fits.. I’ll take some photos this evening. Thanks for the help fellas

That’s the classic gig bag. I remember many comments on how good those were compared to the standards of the time.

I appreciate the information. The soft case feels pretty sturdy. The guitar is in like new condition, has marks where it was hanged from a hanger but not really noticeable. I’m looking for a wiring diagram for it because the wiring and pots seem cheap… for future upgrades. I like the idea of getting locking tuners since it has a trem. Over all very nice appearance and feeling. Looking on forums it appears that it hard to find a OEM hard case for it that fits. Any suggestions, for a good case with good fitment?

I keep all my guitars in gig bags. They are high enough quality unless it’s a storage hold on a bus or plane.
