HXDA - Clean Setup.

I realize that most people will rarely (if ever) play their HXDA this clean, but I've been talking about how I love the HXDA for clean tones. So I thought it'd be fun to share a quickie demo on my 30W HXDA - - just a very, very short noodle to show how it sounds. A recording is worth a bazillion words.

I had nothing in mind to play, which explains why the playing is sh!t, but it's about the tone this time.

The only mic on the amp is a Sennheiser 945 dynamic about 25" from the grille, angled toward the edge of one of the speakers on the closed back 2x12 I use with it, loaded with V-30s.

The master volume is maxed. The HX gain is at about 8:30, and the DA gain is lower than that by a smidge. Switches are DA, HX, HX. The EQ is a little too bright for this mic. Treble 2:00, Middle 2:00, bass 8:00. Presence 10:00, Master maxed. Not too loud in the room at all set this way. I should have given it a little less treble and presence.

I used the neck pickup on a Telecaster. I know. I'm not a Telecaster guy. But I wanted to demo a clean, single coil tone.

There's a little H9 delay, and that's the only effect. Note that the only hiss in this track comes from the H9. My rig is dead quiet, no hums or buzzes. When the delay is off, there's no hiss, but I like delay, so it's there.

The tubes in the amp at the moment are an NOS Mullard in V1, and the stock JJs in V2 and 3. The output tubes are NOS Siemens EL-34s. I like the tone, subject to my cavil about too much treble.

I picked up a telecaster about 6 months ago, I’ve never been a tele guy or even a single coil player, but I’ve come to really enjoy the tones I get out of it. It came with the fender vintage 64 pickups and has more of a “ rock and roll “ vibe than the typical twang you associate with a tele.
I know it’s not a PRS but I love its simplicity. It also has me interested in trying a vela or NF53 just to see how it compares.

While I don’t necessarily disagree, I snapped this pic of the one I recorded the clip with. I think it looks nice, albeit in a traditional way.

My biggest issue with Teles and Strats is how the notes sound above the 12th fret (can be a bit thin). Below the 12th fret, I like the clean tones.

Love the gold hardware

Agree! And wonder… is this another byproduct of the 6 on one side headstocks (along with the higher string tension on the higher strings which has always been my big objection to them!)
I have to use a hybrid set of strings on a 6 in line guitar to balance the tensions. I’m too used to a standard set on a 3 per side.

Kind of a Mary Kay vibe, right?

The one that’s here is Anderson’s “Icon” vintage model. Close enough to a vintage Tele to make a specific client happy with an ongoing project. I did not expect to do a gig like this until it waltzed into the door.

The guitar plays very easily, sounds the business, and I have no real complaints about it.

However…

This afternoon I pulled out the CU24 30th PS, stuck a boost in front of the Lone Star’s clean channel and the DG30, and it kicked some serious ass. What a great reminder of why I’m a PRS guy!

Great point! I haven’t tried that. How effective are they?
All of my 3 per side guitars have a standard set of 10 - 46 on them. That’s what I’m used to. Slapped a trusted brands set on a 6 in line and the GBE strings were too tight.
Couldn’t get the bends to feel right. So I tried a 9.5 standard set. Top 3 strings felt a bit better but the EAD strings were too slinky. Now I use a hybrid 9 top 10 bottom or 9 - 46 and it’s the closest I can get in feel to the 10 -46 I have in the others.

I thought you had tried the balanced tension sets.
