Just wondering if any HXDA 50 watt owners are using a Marshall 4x12 cabinet with this amp. And if so, what model are you using? Thanks in advance.

Being a Marshall style amp, I can't imagine it wouldn't sound good. With everything, it all depends on what you personally want to hear. Wish I could give you some first hand info.

Yeah, I'm hoping that someone has tried this combination out at some time. As far as what I want to hear?...All the half-stack glory of 50 red hot HXDA watts thru 4x12 Celestions. Can't afford the PRS model, but there are many players here in Austin that are selling these cabinets at truly rock bottom cash prices. Since I record at home, have the space and don't gig, why not?

No reason not to. The best sounding cabinet I have ever played through was a beat-up old basketweave Marshall cab, probably a '68, with original G12Ms, model 1960B (straight cab).

It was at a studio I booked for a session a few years ago, and unfortunately for purposes of this discussion, the amp I was using at the time was a Two-Rock Onyx. It had a very Marshall-oriented tone for a TR, but it wasn't an HXDA.

However, I think an HXDA would have sounded killer with it, because the Onyx could get a sound that wasn't terribly far off. I wasn't sure it would be a good match, but when I hooked my head up to that cab, it was...perfection.

I still think about what a great sounding cab that was. The more modern ones don't sound the same, at least to me.

Since there's been just a couple of responses about a Marshall cabinet, let's widen the query.

Is anyone with a HXDA 50 watt amp running into ANY 4x12 cabinet either live or in the studio? And if so, what Make and Model? Thanks in advance.

The HXDA amp is definitely on my radar and maybe one day I'll get one. I already have a Marshall 4x12 "1960b" cabinet and every amp I've ever plugged into it sounded great! (I think I have more amps than guitars. hahaha) I can't imagine any reason why a HXDA would sound bad through a high end Marshall 4x12 cabinet. Stay away from the el-cheapo Marshall cabinets.

I'd be sporting a 1960B with 25w Greenbacks. I really like these amps driving cabs at 16 ohms, too. It's one of my fav cabs, period, for rock, blues, etc. Then I'd start covering some Kansas.

Speaking of going completely off-topic...

For some reason I recall reading that Duane Allman used to take the backs off of his Marshall 4x12s and keep them that way, and also loaded them with EV or JBL speakers. I forget which.

Sorry for the hijack! Back to your regularly scheduled programming now...

A little online research states in a couple of places(one being the Marshall forum) that:

"Duane’s and Dickey’s Marshall cabinets were modified. They were half-open-backed and, instead of the 25-watt Celestion “greenback” speakers that gave Clapton his distinctive Cream-era howl, boasted JBL-D120s for a cleaner sound..." Cleaner sound?...yeah and loud and heavy as hell too~! lol~!

Prefer the 1960B, but will go for a 1960A if the price(and speakers) is right once I demo the HXDA through it, after Thanksgiving.

I'd love to hear your tone report after you've had a chance to play through it! Great to learn as much as we can about our amps!

Since I instigated this thread, I thought I'd share what I found about 4x12 Cabinets made by the usual suspects.

Mesa, Bogner, Orange, Diezel, PRS, Line 6, Engl, Friedman, Peavey, Fender and yes, Marshall load theirs with Celestion G12 Vintage 30s. Some of the less expensive 4x12 cabinets have their 'house brand' of oem speakers. There are some exceptions to the rule here(65 Amps and Morgan), but I found it very interesting that the majority are using V30s in their NEW cabinet offerings I saw while clicking thru the online catalogs. So my preliminary conclusion is that if I want to run 4x12's with my HXDA, just buy another 2x12 cabinet loaded with V30's and stack them. Though it's 'not the same' as a single 4x12, and a trade off acoustically, it solves a basic, practical problem: getting them in my car.

And you don't need two people to move them around, either, which is a good thing in and of itself.

 My conclusion, exactly.

What??!! And ruin a perfectly intimidating half-stack (the left half)? No way, man. That gig was about pure brutality.

Cabs like that are best served stacked on top of each other.
Nothing says rock & roll like a double stack upon each others backs.
Boogie, that looks killer, big brothers to my mini rec dual stack.

I own a PRS 50-watt 25th Anniversary amp and run it through a vintage Marshall 4x12 slant cab with pre-Rola G12M 25-watt Greenback Celestions. To me, it is a match made in heaven- just perfect. The highs never get piercing or fatiguing. Same as LSchefman stated above: I also run my Two Rock Onyx 50-watt head into that same Marshall cabinet and it also sounds great through that speaker cabinet.

For short time about a year and a half ago I owned a PRS Tuxedo 2x12 pine cab with it's stock Celestion V30 speakers. Personally, I will never understand the appeal of the Vintage 30 Celestions. Through the PRS 2x12, my 25th Anniversary head sounded extremely aggressive in the treble frequencies. I PUMMELED it with volume over the course of a few months to make sure the V30 speakers were thoroughly broken-in. It never started to sound much better than the day I bought it. I didn't sound terrible- just not my preference. I think PRS should consider some other speaker options in their cabinets. Vintage Greenbacks (and recreations of them) sound excellent with any vintage Marshall-type amp, and the PRS 25th Anniversary 50-watt.
