How Many Guitars Does It Take...

I'd say it's less about numbers and more about what you do with them and what they mean to you. A harem becomes a collection when you stop playing them all...

Do I have to play them well?
If you saw my guitars, they're nothing "collection" worthy, so you might think I just play.
If you heard me play, you'd think I'm just a collector.

i'd rather have 2 or 3 i play alot, then 30 i dont. (unless i win the lottery)

I have 6 USA Made PRS Guitars (and a 7th ordering in a month or so). I always have 3 "Main" Guitars that I play constantly... they often change. BUT... the best part of having multiple guitars is playing one that you haven't played in a few weeks (or even dare I say a month!!!) and being inspired all over again! I'd love to have 30 USA Made PRS Guitars, however, I wouldn't want to buy them all at once!! But I can tell you if I do end up with 30... I would have that inspirational spark every couple of weeks!

I don't think I could have 30 guitars if they weren't all (or 90%) USA Made PRS. I understand what the Student Edition Guitars are and I respect what they afford guitarists that are learning or who are on a budget, however, my hands and ears and tell the difference... So let me put it this way...

I'd Rather have 7 USA Made PRS Guitars than 4,000 guitars of any other brand!!

The good news? No buckle rash wearing a gorilla suit!

Yeah but sometimes those suits have hard rubber nipples. That could cause something similar to buckle rash.

That's right... rubber gorilla nipple rash.

I think we should ask an expert.

I think you nailed it. When you have guitars that are not played and are still special to you, you have a collection.

I don't get all this talk about "Collections" and "Harems"...

Give me 1 good guitar and I'm golden...

Entertaining thread:D
I guess I'd say at whatever point you're buying something just to have it and not to serve a purpose in your tone palette. There's nothing wrong with that. I'd love to be able to do it. I'd have to have them all hanging out like a guitar store - or Markie's :) :p

I've always thought it was a matter of intent:

If guitars are bought for the purpose of creating a collection, it's a collection. It probably doesn't matter if the guitars are played or not.

My question is whether a collector and a person who invests in guitars is the same thing? I don't think so, but I don't do either, really, so what do I know?

I think that Guitar investing has pretty much gone away Les. I know there are stories of "I made xxxx on this Guitar or that Guitar", but the novice Guitar investor has somewhat disappeared in the last 5-6 years. Nobody wants to tell the story of losing 3K on their Guitar investment. Many are more than willing to tell about making $500 though. I used to have a buttload of Vintage Guitars. I could keep them 3-4 years & then turn a 25-50% profit on them. Those days are long gone & the novice guys (Like myself) have or will take a bath on the sh*t they were/are sitting on. The good news is that we can tell our Wives that we made $500 on that Guitar we sold a while back. This way we can justify buying that next one............

Just my personal opinion!
