How is the scarf joint on your Silver sky? Is it very visible?

It’s all good. My first posts weren’t all helpful, constructive, and picture laden either, and it’s important to encourage new members to find their place on the forums rather than us being dismissive.

@Jkater was talking about a relevant topic (for them) appropriate to this forum.

This place isn’t all that busy, and it’s not like they were talking about electric ukuleles and Boss amps.

Sh!t all my current posts lack help and are boorishly unconstructive!

It wasn't specifically directed at you but that I see quite a lot of new threads from people whose first post is about something that doesn't really make any difference. People that haven't bothered introducing themselves and just joining to make a comment about something quite petty and by petty I mean something that doesn't fundamentally affect the playability, the sound and function, something extremely minor that also cannot be fixed or changed. I know that some things affect people differently but I was more referring to the Guitar as a whole and, you mist admit that in terms of the instrument, the way it plays, sounds and feels and the overall look - particularly from the front, a more noticeable scarf joint and headstock shade isn't something 'major' or something any one of us could actually help to put right.

If you don't like it aesthetically - even if it is petty in the whole scheme of things, you have the option to send back for example but asking us if anyone of us has something like or better/worse with out any picture is also difficult. If, for example, I have one that is a darker shade, I could see that has not too extremely different and say its different but not bad despite the fact that it is more different than yours - its perception and without a reference - ie a Pic of yours, no one can say that yours is good, bad or normal.

You have 2 choices, keep or send back and asking the question is irrelevant because if its more unacceptable to you - even if its 'normal' with some better, some worse for example - is that going to change what you decide to do? Will you keep or send back based on the perception of others that have, in general, all accepted that the SS fitted in their collection with a Scarf joint because they are all happy with it as an instrument and he way it feels, plys and sounds.

Its not like asking if the bridge is set right or whether or not you can change string gauge without having to tweak some thing, not like asking if their Tone/Volume control is behaving properly - things that people can actually advise and all affect the playability and/or function. I am not calling you petty or overly picky, but more that the overall aspect and context of the question is. Like I said, none of us can say its better, normal or worse without a reference picture and whether or not the result of the answers would actually have any impact on your decision to keep or send back - despite sounding, feeling and playing like any other and those others having a scarf joint too.

I am sorry that you happened to have my response and sorry if I upset or annoyed you. You just so happened to be the latest person whose first post was a trivial question - again in the whole context of the instrument - the way it sounds, plays, feels and functions - and something that none of us can advise on especially with no reference to see if yours in particular was better, average or worse than what others can compare theirs to. It would be nice for people who really want to be part of the community actually introduce themselves first, make a few contributions to the Forum - enough at least to be able to post Pictures of their instrument that show any areas they have some curiosity or concern over. I doubt that my reaction, which I am sorry you happened to be the one that got that reaction, would have been the same and, with a picture, there would be more people that can compare and maybe even post pictures of theirs to show they are better, the same or worse. If you are not sending it back because you are happy with everything else as I assume if it was that bad that you cannot accept or live with, you would have done so without needing to ask the question. If you are happy, and just curious, then it would be better if you introduce yourself, contribute to the forums until you have made sufficient comments to post a picture when you created a post like this.

Again, sorry for my first post and hope you can understand what I meant by 'petty' rather than calling you petty for asking.
May I interject what I hope were implied words? I'll use bold and underline.

If the words I added weren't implied, then I think your post could be construed as "speaking for everyone" rather than just stating your opinion. That would be unfortunate, because I usually really enjoy reading your take on things.

Hi everyone!
I just received a Silver sky and the scarf joint near the headstock was quite noticeable due to different shades of the two maple pieces. While I find scarf joint a great idea from a functional point of view, it did bother me a bit from the esthetic. How is it on your SS?
If you were able to post pics, I would appreciate very much.
Thanks all!
Welcome! I always end up posting a question I couldn't solve by myself as a first post in most forums -- it seems natural to me, but what do I know? I'm just another anonymous voice on the Internet.

I don't have a SS, so I can't comment about what the scarf joints are supposed to look like on them. But I do have an S2 SC and I was just admiring its scarf joint earlier today -- it helps to define its identity. I'll show you mine... ;)

BTW, is your handle pronounced "Jake Hater"? If so, why do you hate Jake?

@Tim S I kind of thought that I was only speaking from my own perspective and do so every time. I certainly wouldn't speak on behalf of others at all and never have. I am certain they have their own voice too. I believe though that we are a community of individuals all of whom have their own voice, own opinion and certainly free to use that whether or not any of us here, myself included, agree or disagree with what is said.

Whether or not you (or anyone else) agree with what my first post said, is up to the individual to decide and I certainly wasn't speaking on behalf of the community as a whole. I do think that its common courtesy though to read the forum rules, introduce themselves in the appropriate thread etc first - become part of the community that you are looking for advice, help or even to ask something out of curiosity. When asking is something'righ/normal etc with an aesthetic, its also impossible without having a picture because what they call 'dark/darker' may not be excessively dark to allay any concerns. A good way to build up comments to be able to share pictures is by introducing themselves in the appropriate place.

Its different if you are sat on a help desk and the soul reason you are on a Forum is to help regardless of the gravity of the issue. Maybe its the fact that I am British and its common courtesy to introduce yourself to a community and spend a bit of time getting to know the rules and regulations of that community before seeking something from that community. Maybe because I am British, I find that more annoying than others do.

Anyway, I won't write another Essay on this subject but I will say that everytime I speak (or type in this case), I am speaking from my own perspective and not speaking on behalf of the community as a whole and, if I do find myself typing anothers words or opinion, I will reference that Person for example as @Tim S said....

Seriously though... lately there seems to be rather critical comments from some of the old-timers on this fine forum when a new member joins to ask about a specific problem (why wouldn't they - it's a PRS forum, right?) I think these folks should be given some slack, and just because they're not going through the motions of commenting on posts, heaping praise, etc. before asking about a problem, doesn't mean they shouldn't ask the question (even if it's asked in a way that you might not have done it.) I'm just saying...

That one confuses a lot of people. It started when I got into posting stuff and needed a moniker (username) for soundclick, forums ( I was an actice HCEG member for a long time), etc. I was getting into Jazz and wanted to pick "jazz cat' (though I'm no real jazzer). it was taken, so was Jcat, so was jazz kater (German) and I ended up with the short german version jkater…

Here's a sample of my feeble attempts at playing jazzy stuff:

I'm more of an acoustic fingerstyle player and for 25 years, didn't even own an electric guitar.

Thank you for posting a pic of your guitar's neck. Scarf joint are a great solution and when they're done nice, that's a bonus.

Cheers

It's easy to slightly misunderstand intent or message and I, myself, struggled a bit not to think that your first sentence was invalidating my question. But you expressed yourself quite clearly afterwards and it's all good, I am, to be frank, very grateful to those who reassured me and welcomed me in this new (for me) community. That includes you. I am not trying to "please everyone" by saying this but I get a sense that this is a great community and I will enjoy being part of it. And I intend to post pics, vids, opinions and kudos to be of a contributing member of this place.
Btw, You are impressively articulate. Are you a writer by profession?

I needed to clean and restring my SS today, so I tried to take some pictures...

Man!!! I hope mine looks remotely like this. It's gorgeous.

But it probably won't and that's ok too. I'll be a bit jealous and survive it. :D

Interestingly, this whole thread has made me much less apprehensive of whatever the joint looks like and it was indeed my goal in the first place. I wanted to get a sense of what to expect and the few replies made clear that the look varies a lot (like wood should). Fact is, as a player, I loved the SS I tried and that's the main thing. A nice looking neck like yours would be a wonderful bonus so I cross my fingers.

Nice one! Thanks for sharing.

I see a PRS hollow body in your future maybe, unless you already have one.

I came close to getting a hollow body PRS once but it didn't work out. This Yamaha SA-2200 is a helluva fine guitar and I since have upgraded everything about it. Duesenberg trem (fancy bigsby style), duesenberg "Z"tuners, Nickel Hardware, Boutique Kloppmann german pups. new electronics, etc.
Japanese made high end Yammies are fantastic. I own three: this SA2200, a rare PAC904 and a super rare PAC1412.

All I know is I finally felt up a Silver Sky this weekend (Tone Shop in Addison Texas, great shop) and it felt glorious. I'd love to have that neck on a single cut.

I drove a couple of hours to try this one out. It was used for a couple/few hours by a lady who decided she'd rather have some kind of semi hollow.
It's also one of the first 500 with hard case! Bonus.
As soon as I saw it the deal was done. Totally lucked out, but as you say, even if the neck was the usual suspect, and even without the hard case I would have bought it with zero regrets.
It just plays and sounds so great.
