How Do They Know?

Like most here, I fight the constant battle against persistent GAS. However, every now and then I get really serious about replacing current gear with something new and different. Such was the case tonight. I was ready to give in and order a Fargen Olde 800 MKII tomorrow. Then I plugged into my Mesa RA100 and it sounded as good as I've ever heard it sound. It's like it knew I was thinking of replacing it and it brought it's "A" game just to make me rethink things. This has also happened to me with guitars. How do they know?

Could it be that they didn't change but your interest and the focus you placed on your playing made it sound that good? Tone is in your fingers, remember? You pulled the best out of you and that pulled the best out of your gear. I have gotten out a piece of gear I haven't played in a while and was impressed at how good it sounded. Made me remember why I keep it. Then a few weeks later I think it just sounds blah. The problem isn't the gear, it is my playing.
