How Did I Ever Get Along Without This?

One year ago I bought a Swiss-made KHE ACS 8x4 amplifier/cab rack mount switch box to make switching between my 4 amps faster in the heat of a session. I don't think I've posted about it here before, but as I was using it today, I started thinking I ought to do a post. It's that good.

I give all credit and thanks for this to Elvis, who hipped me to it.

It works as advertised - can switch between 8 amplifiers and 4 speaker cabs, completely silently. Yes, indeed, the switching is noiseless, no clicks, pops or static. There is no tone suck. In fact, it has a very high quality buffer built in for long cable runs from the switcher to the amp. It has inputs for guitar and/or pedalboard on the front and back panels. The I/O is isolated, no ground loops. Has MIDI. Has a built-in loop for an attenuator.

Did I mention that there is no tone suck and that I am a complete maniac about tone suck? I did? Well, there isn't any. What goes in, comes out.

In other words, for switching between amps, or between amps and speaker cabs, etc., the KHE ACS 8x4 is absolutely perfect. If you're a serious maniac with more than eight amps, no worries, several switchers can be daisy-chained, and the daisy-chain can be MIDI controlled.

If you need to switch effects loops to your amps, they have models for that, too, and they can be incorporated into the system. You can put together a whole rack of this stuff, if you're that person.

As icing on the cake, the switches are one-touch electronic toggle switches that are irresistibly cool. They're so cool I don't even want to use MIDI with them, though that's in the plan, too. The thing is built like a tank, and everything about it is top-drawer.

I have no affiliation with this company. I haven't even corresponded with them in a year since I got the thing. I'm posting because this is a product that works. If you're into amps, and have 4 or more, this is your huckleberry. I figured you might want to at least know about it.

There are a couple of similar switchers that merit mention as well:

The Ampete out of Germany does similar things, and the Kahayan out of Spain is also similar. There are detail differences, but the bottom line is that all of these are terrific studio tools. If you don't need cabinet switching and have three or fewer amps, the Lehle 1 at 3 SGOS amp switching pedal is fantastic as well - but it won't switch speaker cabs.

Here's a link. I'll post a pic later today.

Here’s a pic of the KHE in the rack with the power supply for the amps, switching system, and pedalboard.

I forgot to turn it on to make the little lights glow in the pic. I know - you're worried! "My god, there are NO LIGHTS," you're thinking!

Never fear. The little lights all reassuringly work. And to allay your concern even further, they're little red lights.

"I think you need to replace this pic, Les. It's no good without the lights."

"One day, my friend, one day. Until then, you'll just have to take my word for it."

"Why are there so many empty rack spaces between the switcher and the power supply?"

"I figure it's good to put a little distance between power transformers and signal cables. And it works. There's no hum or noise whatsoever. Ain't broke. Not fixin' it."

"Why power the pedalboard and switcher with the amp power supply?"

"The outlets are isolated. The amp outlets have a 45 Amp power reservoir. This way, all the power going into the amps and the various effects and switcher have the same grounded power source. Again, no noise. Perfect setup."

"Why MIDI at all?"

"When I hook it up to my computer, I'll be able to sit at my workstation with the guitar strapped on, and the headphones on, and switch between amps at the touch of the mouse. Each speaker gets its own mic stand, and during a session they're all set up. I can select the appropriate mic signal from my workstation as well. Don't have to get up, reset things, and lose my train of thought as I move from track to track, nor do I have to trip over guitar and headphone cables."

"You've thought of everything."

"Not really. But I am working on answering the question, 'What is the meaning of life?'"

"Any inkling so far?"

"I plan to announce it when I win the Nobel Prize For Bullsh!t."

"At least that's an award you're fully qualified for."

Great - now all I need to do is buy 7 more amps ;) Seriously, though, I understand your need Les. Makes your life much easier. I've seen these (or others like it?) in the backline of various guitarists. Need drives purchase.

Before I start digging, can it handle cabs of different impedance?
It has no impedance settings. If you want to use cabs of different impedance, but have all of your amps set to the same impedance, they recommend the Weber 'Z-Master' impedance matching device. As you know, mismatches can be OK if you follow certain guidelines, but I'd use the Weber device:

I'm pretty positive it's a Pottery Barn hinged basket, we have a couple of them lol.
No really, it's from Yore! Why, Pottery Barn must have seen mine and copied it! ;)

Seriously, there's never enough storage in my studio. I use it to keep microphone shock mounts, clips, and other light weight but bulky gizmos for mics and mic stands in one place. So it's handy. And of course, it's from Yore..

Worthy of mention is the Delisle switchers as well. They make various options for amp and cab amounts, loops, etc.
