The HXDA has always been on my "list." An amp from the prime-time era of CAD goodness, hand wiring, and the pinnacle of smaller batch PRS high-end amp production. But, since I had to buy used I wanted one that I was confident was in good condition. DIdn't think it was gonna happen for a while, and then out of nowhere, this fellow posts for sale not only his immaculate HXDA 30 head, but a matching 2x12 with it! I'm a sucker for the cabinets from that time frame, too. I had a couple guitars for sale myself, so I messaged him and let him know, "Hey, if these guitars sell, and you still have the amp, I'll want to buy it from you. If you get another offer in the meantime, take it, I'll understand, just wanted to let you know I'm interested."

Well, whaddya know, both my guitars sold over the weekend, and he found an amp that he wanted and needed to move the HXDA rig fast, so it was ON!

Happy to report it's in just as good of shape as he described, and functions perfectly - dead quiet (when it's supposed to be), and the build quality is just something else. Bonus, seller had the PRS branded soft cover for the head, and was nice enough to include a really good speaker cable, too. And, as you can see, it even matches my 594!

Wiener dog approved!

Wait, were we talking about an amp?

The big question, for me, was how would the HXDA compare to the considerably more affordable HDRX 20 that I already have. The HDRX 20 is really a remarkable sounding amp, especially with the master turned up on the higher side, but I hoped the HXDA would sound a little better at all MV settings. I also suspected it would be slightly less rotund in the lows - not that the HDRX is boomy, but it is sort of tuned for single coils. Well, I'm happy to say both things are true! The tones from lower MV settings on the HXDA are warmer and closer to the sound with the amp wide open - it still sounds best opened up, but it's really close. I probably wouldn't use the HDRX in a lower volume setting, but I definitely would the HXDA. Also, the bass gain on the HXDA is more useable than on the HDRX, without having a bright cap on the bass channel of the HDRX, on its own, the bass channel can be a little dull, the HXDA it can be mixed higher and still cut. The HXDA has just a little bit more of that barking midrange overall. Credit where due, the HDRX 20 is still a fantastic amp, it's crazy to see this being available at such a price compared to what was around even 10 years ago in that more affordable range. How well it compares overall to the HXDA is really impressive.

So far I like the first switch in the HX setting, second switch both ways depending on how much gain I want, and third switch in the DA setting.

Really happy to have added such a great, clean example of the HXDA to "the wall." I think it's going to see a ton of use!

At first glance the dog in the case looked like it was taking a dump. I don’t wanna say I was freaked out, but…well, I hyperventilated and had to breathe into a paper bag. I also had some mild angina.

Fortunately between an Ativan and a nitrotab things turned out OK, but it was a close-run thing.

I’m fine now. Really. I have a whole vial of nitros just in case I have nightmares that I’ll take to bed with me, if I ever go to bed. No more coffee at night.

The amp is beautiful. You scored big time.

I have never seen a better matched amp/cab/guitar set! Ever so many congrats on that kit of perfection!! I don't normally comment on amp stuff, because I know nothing about them, but I do know that set was made to go with that guitar ;~)) Cute dogs too, but I could ever let a pet sit in one of my cases, those dogs live in Shangri-La!!! Are you accepting applications for new pets?

The best amp ever out of the CAD shop, IMNSHO, and I couldn't be happier to see you get one! When it comes to real deal, no excuses Plexi tones, there's just nothing I've found that is superior to it. The 30s are kind of rare, from what I've seen, so that's an additional bonus. Mine are both 50s, and you see 100s out there, but 30s seldom come around.

I think you're already seeing it, but there is something special in the quality of the tone. It captures the fire and ice essence of the original in a way that sounds, somehow, more substantial. Bigger. I'm sure that the more you play it, you'll get that sense of what I mean. As a tip I'll pass along from Les, if you get a chance to grab a set of Siemens EL-34s somewhere along your path, it's a worthwhile exercise to test them against the SED-Winged C tubes (which are also excellent). I love the rage of the SEDs, but the Siemens added an authoritative tightness at high volume that I gravitated to at first listen. I've since put them in both of my HX/DAs.

If you ever get a chance to look inside, you'll be impressed at the sheer quality of assembly, and components. Your amp was one of the "damn the cost, build it for the best tone" variety from CAD, and it's a special beast. Again, congrats on a beautiful amp!

One of my session players put it best:

“You hear the amp and the distortion, like with most amps when they’re turned up, but you also hear through to the guitar. I’ve never heard another amp do that.”

I love the Siemens tubes. I even installed a quad in my Lone Star 100.

The full set of NOS RCA. JAN-GE and Siemens tubes in the Lone Star are probably worth more than the amp at this point, but I had to do it; the amp is too heavy to drag upstairs and ship if I sold it, and I can’t let it just sit there doing nothing! 🤣

What kinds of speakers are in the cabinet? I have the 50 watt and keep wanting to go 4x12. And then it’s what speakers? And then it’s should they be mismatched? And then the NOS tube thing. Such a cool amp begs so many questions

Yes! I do sincerely like the amps in the current catalog, but the only thing still being made that way is the DG30, and I think it's a shame that there aren't more choices in that top tier.

Where did you guys source those Siemens EL34's from? I seem to remember it being Mesa, but I could be wrong.

Congrats Andy! I know how long you've been wanting one of these. So happy for you that you got one!!!
It has been a while, for sure! But worth the wait for this set!

It came with V30's, and although I'm not always the biggest V30 fan, they do sound darn good with the HXDA. I have a V30 and H75 Creamback in my HDRX 2x12, and it sounds excellent - it gets pretty close to Greenback tone, but with more power handling. I had also considered a set of Scumback J75's, or maybe "just" a set of Celestion M25 Greenbacks, but I think that'll depend on how much volume I want, with those being less efficient.

I am about to dive in this morning and see what tubes are in the preamp - I suspect the stock JJ ecc83s, and if so, an NOS Mullard 12ax7 short plate will go in V1, and maybe RCA/GE in V2 and V3, or some of the better JJ 12ax7 variety, we'll see!

Most I have bought watching Reverb. They are sometimes under German brand names like RFT or Rohre. Mesa does have one, they’ll all be NOS tubes because they haven’t had STR450 in the catalog for a long time. As an aside, the Mesa STR450 was commonly listed at $150 or less a pair until the “no more tubes” scare and Covid, then they went to $175, and again up to $225 a pair as a normal price… you’ll find most at that price today.

If you shop Reverb and EBay, some sellers in Germany have marginally better pricing at times. You just have to shop. Like all NOS tubes, it’s just keeping your eyes open for what you’re wanting.

I got my sets from Mesa; their nomenclature for them was, as Rick says, STR450. They were $160 a pair when I bought them, and yeah, they’ve gone up, partly the tube scare, partly that as they sell them, they become harder to find.

I plan to buy another couple of sets soon, because I used my spares in the Lone Star!

The reason I looked into them in the first place was that when I met Doug Sewell, he suggested trying a set as he said they were the closest thing to an NOS Mullard EL34 in terms of sound quality.
