I've been dabbling in guitar for over 40 years and have owned piles of guitars but never a PRS oddly enough.

I just spotted a 2006 Paul Reed Smith Singlecut with a AA Cherry Flametop with #7 pickups. No birds or binding on the fretboard, it has dot fret markers. Looks like a beautiful guitar. Comes with a heavy-duty looking PRS rectangular case and a large white leather PRS guitar strap with birds embossed on it.

It totally looks legit but somebody suggested that I check in with you guys here on this forum to help insure that it isn't a counterfeit. I highly doubt that it is but I'm no expert that's for sure.

I would like to post a link to this guy's ad to see what you all think but I'm not sure if that's against forum rules here.

Please advise. And thanks!

Well, since you are asking to have us look for authenticity purposes I think that is more than OK.

In general that sounds like a typical PRS Singlecut from that era, with the moons or dots (not sure which would have been "default" that year) vice the birds.

Hi,

Is this the one? I'm no expert either, but if it is, it looks legit to me.

The seller has agreed to hold it for me if I send an e-transfer. Then I will pay the balance when he arrives at my house.

He lives about an hour and twenty minutes from my house and he said that he could deliver it to me on Saturday which would be icing on the cake.

Looks like a solid deal to me. The price is $1700.00 Canadian "firm". That's $1300 USD btw.

There's another guy selling his PRS but it probably isn't quite as high up the food chain as that Singlecut Flametop.

This other one is sort of a light brown plaintop with satin finish. It's a PRS Standard 24, 20th Anniversary Limited Edition.

His write up goes as follows:
"PRS Standard 24, 20th Anniversary Limited Edition. Would love to have sold by this Saturday. $1650 Canadian. HFS/Vintage Bass Pickups “Regular” PRS Neck Profile Phase II Locking Tuners PRS Tremolo Satin finish.

He's only $50.00 lower and doesn't say anything about being firm on his price. But I still like that Flametop!

Is that 2006 Singlecut Flametop what they consider a "Core" model?

Which do you like better? Double cut or single cut? I will say those Standards are pure gold! I hate myself for selling mine years back and I'm constantly on the lookout for another (at a reasonable price).

The Standard 24 will be more of a modern sounding guitar compared to the Singlecut. It will also likely weigh less and has a thinner neck carve (SC typically had wide / fat, closer to today’s Pattern neck carve while the Standard 24 says regular, equivalent to today’s Pattern Regular carve). How much does the weight and neck carve matter to you? Wouldn’t surprise me if the SC weighed close to 9lbs while the Standard was more like 7.5 to 8lbs.

Around here, we typically say the best answer is to buy both! :D

Yes, it is core.
Buy it.

With everything considered I think that I'd have to go with the Singlecut.

Thanks for that info!

I'm really leaning much more towards the Singlecut.

OK so here is the good news,

I got the cash together now and I contacted this fellow, great guy, he said never mind the e-transfer, he trusts me to not flake out on him. Makes it even easier!

As far as the question about a possible counterfeit he said that he bought the guitar from a PRS collector a few years ago and that guy had bought it new,etc...and the guy had like eight high-end PRS guitars. He also ran the serial number and everything checked out. And he himself has had seven different PRS guitars over the years including high-end McCartys and he said that this one that I'm buying sounds as good as the best of them with "hot pickups and rich harmonics".

He will deliver it tomorrow or Saturday. Wow this is all going so fast! Never would have seen this coming.

Yes, it is core.
Buy it.

Forgive my ignorance as I have a lot to learn about this brand but is Core the top of range as far as models go and what would be the difference between the Core models and the other models like the S2 line?

I'd be curious to see what this guitar might be worth if you bought it new today or if there's a current model available in stores that I might compare this one to. I know that I'm getting a good guitar and everything but I don't really know much about it or its value.

Counterfeit one would look like a child assembled it while blindfolded. The one you are looking at is the real deal. Don't worry about it not being authentic (as long as it looks like what he's advertising).
