I have been using my McCarty for the few detuned songs our band is doing. I had put a 5909 squabbin in the bridge and REALLY like the way it sounds but after a while I began to feel like the 5909 wasn't cutting it in the detuned range.

I had been using a 5150 head and slant cab since 1994. I like the head and feel the cabs produce a nice full range sound except for the fizzy high end that had to be dialed out. A few months ago I switched to a chambered straight cab loaded with seventy80 celestions and have struck gold! This cab sounds really good. It's a little more mid range focused than the 5150/ shefield is AND the fizzy top end is gone.

So with a different cab in the mix I decided to put the HFS in my McCarty. Even though I have never liked the HFS I couldn't help to wonder why this pickup continues to be rated so high by so many members here. Seems the 5150/shefield cab may be the reason for disliking the HFS. So far I'm happy with it in the detuned stuff but I'm going to gig with it for a while and see how it works out. I have a SC250 bridge pickup and a pair of dragon 1s if the HFS doesn't work out.

Anybody have any comments about the SC250?

Thanks all.

the 250 bridge is a Tremonti with a cover as far as I know - should be perfect!

I love the HFS...

Unless the specs on the PRS store are incorrect, they are both 15.42k. The 250 is covered and the Tremonti uncovered, of course, but for the 250 it says magnet type is "alnico" and for the Temonti "custom" whatever that means, but I bet it means some sort of ceramic/hybrid from the sound of the thing.

Simply put, the real sound that most people know of the PRS guitar is of either the McCarty of the HFS/VB combo that was the standard in Custom 24's for a VERY long time and on many an album and televised live performance.
