Seen something you might really, really, really like on eBay? It's up for bids starting at a very low price. And say, "Man, y'know, that's really nice. I just might jump on it, the price is SO right. But, I really don't NEED it. But, I WANT it. But, I really don't NEED it. But, I COULD afford it. Nah, I really don't NEED it. I'll just watch and see what happens."

And the clock ticks down. And nobody BID on it. I could have HAD it. :bawling:

I have watched 2 sweet deals just go off into the sunset in the last couple of days.

This forum has just totally ruined me. It's all you guys' fault...

Can't stand it.... <shoulders slumped>

Think I'll go work in the yard, bleaaah.

I usually jump the gun and bid and draw attention to it and then let it go as the price climbs too high...

Yeah I have, but I have also thrown down the opening bid expecting to not win. Ended up with two SE guitars that way.

 I can't say I've ever been in a place where I could say "I could afford it", always had to scrimp & scratch for it, but you're last 3 sentences are perfect!!!

:D Yeah, I could afford it, IF I didn't mind putting it on plastic and doing the monthly thing. And it's not like there could be anything MORE important than a new guitar, right?

Who ever said it's only money? Really, what else is it good for? My old age?

:creep: 'Scuse me, y'all while I check out eBay for a while...

Maybe I'm too logical, but if you plan for them, the things that make you wonder and question are already answered. In my view, two things are fact:

1. All work is bad for a person. Everyone needs a release or a hobby.
2. All play is just as bad and dinner can get scarce.

A balance is the best way to go through life. But balance requires planning and effort. If gear is a hobby that brings you happiness (like me), then:

1. You should be able to enjoy your hobby.
1.a The necessities must be taken care of first.
1.b Set a goal for the amount of disposable income you will use in your hobby.
2. Set aside as much as you can during the "meeting the necessities" phase
2.a Get out of debt
2.b Build a savings account that has the amount of your goal.
3. When you see something nice on EBay (or anywhere), and the account for your hobby has enough to buy it, all you have to do is decide if you would rather have that one more than any other one that might pop up while you are building up the Savings account again from this purchase.

It took me 4 years to get out of debt (I still have the mortgage but it's dropping fast too). Since I didn't want to stop my hobby while I got out of debt, I used a plan B. I bought used and broken gear and fixed it as my hobby and as I turned them around, I used that money to build a small savings. No money was used in the hobby that wasn't earned by selling the gear, and in this way I got to play with amps and cheap guitars and not slow down getting out of debt. Once out of debt I started making the savings grow faster. Soon I could buy the good stuff. Now I could buy PS guitars if I wanted too but I still look at each piece I find and I ask if I would rather have it than something else I could get with the money. It's taken 10 years, but I have some pretty nice gear and no debt. I don't add much new gear now as I have most of what I want, but I just bought a DAW and I'm trying to figure out recording. I can see this is going to attack my savings account again!

My comments may seem like a downer, but in the end it's pretty liberating. I'm not wondering if I should bid. If I want it, the money is there. And I'm not paying to use someone else's money for my hobby. Yeah, it's hard at first, but fixing gear was actually fun and taught me what I liked and didn't like in gear (without spending a dime I didn't get back and more) so it was a great experience.

Not a downer at all. In fact, your thought processes mirror the way my mom used to think. And that is a lot harder to accept when you're young and think you have all the time in the world. Then you get older. But I have retained some of that and it has gotten me started with what I have now, so that's good.

So, I am working on 2.a. The savings part will be a little harder considering the job I have, but not impossible. I am lucky in that I do have all I need right now. It'll be a long time, though, before I can think about a PS. I am also lucky in that I am handy when it comes to fixing things, anything, almost.

Anyway, thanks for the comments, they are much appreciated and I do hope they help anyone else reading this thread (I did mean it as an attention getter and conversation provoker, ;)).

Ha! I'm the king of 'Don't need it, want it-ville'.

Being married keeps it somewhat in check but there's plenty of stuff sitting around here that I do not need but HAD to have.

A worship leader was leery of taking his PS acoustic out, so he had it on EBay. I contacted him and was going to take $250+ less than he was asking for and $2k+ less than the norm. I hemmed-n-hawed and it's no longer around.

And sometimes, what goes around comes around. See another one I watched go by with no bids, and now it's re-listed. It's a one-of-a-kind. Hold me back, mama... 6 more days to watch.

Uh, anybody wanna buy an SE CU24?

Your comments are good ones and liberating if you follow them. Hopefully my son will listen to this advice. Getting out of debt will really make you feel like you are in control. I had a party the day I paid off my house loan (and then proceeded to buy a PRS!)

Getting out of debt is a great feeling!!! But I can relate to all these stories all too well... especially the comment by markintime about watching re-listed items - that's when the G.A.S. hits hard!
