Happy Thanksgiving, PRSF!

All I know is that my wife and I are planning the most vindictive passive aggressive Xmas meal after this thanks(for nuthin’)giving meal.

It’s gonna be filled with weird vegetarian only entrees so my in-laws all leave hungry.

I'll be flying in everyone's face with this heresy, but hopefully y'all are pretty satiated and peaceful right now -- I'll go ahead and just say out loud that roast turkey is not that great, it comes out as really good food about 1 times in 5. All the other stuff around it and getting the family together is what makes it great. Truth be told, the best Thanksgiving meal I can remember was when my wife and I spent two days cooking a Moroccan feast and I think my extended family would (grudgingly) admit as much.

Since my family get-together isn't until Saturday, I've spent Thanksgiving day reflecting on all the good things that other peoples' hands have brought me this day: a warm and comfortable house, pizza delivered to same house, hours of video entertainment delivered via technology indistinguishable from magic, no small quantity of booze from the exotic lands of Washington, California, and Colorado, and wondrous musical toys from PRS, Fractal, Moog and others.

It hasn't been a traditional Thanksgiving (my family will do that on Saturday), but I'm certainly thankful. Cheers all!

This is actually why we miss this kind of holiday in holland. To remind us what has been given to us and silence a little of the discontempt, greed, consumerism etc. Thankfully we have vendors to balance that out nicely for us with black friday. Sort of jing and jang.

And you are right. Turkey is not the easiest bird to cook. Probably has more ceremonial value to eat and be thankfull together with a big bird on a plate to carve from. Since I went sous vide with cooking meat I am done using ovens for quality meat. There is no substitue for perfection.

I ate out tonight, and the turkey was OK. The cranberry sauce was excellent, but it was all at a restaurant that me and my girl love above all other restaurants in our small community, so it was a fabulous dinner. When we do cook a turkey (this time of year of course, two breasts in the freezer - sounds like a porn film title), we found a very cool and easy recipe that we have used now for over a decade and comes out perfect every time!

1 x Turkey breast
1 x Stick of butter
1 x 16 ounce bottle of dark beer (usually use Guiness but LOVE Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout for this recipe, but hard to put such a good beer into a crock pot rather than directly in mouth and belly)
2 x Packets of Lipton onion soup mix

Put in crock pot on high for 5-6 hours. When done, most tender, juicy, flavorful turkey I have ever had! 72% of the time it works EVERY time!!! Seriously though, never had one come out anything other than wonderful!!! Granted, you ain't gettin' no crispy skin, but the meat is top notch!

Welcome to the season of excess! Hope we all make it to the other side with smiles and grace and not too many extra inches round the waste!!!

Yeah, sorry about your luck but it’s more like 5 out of 5 here, and always has been. When my mom and dad were alive, it was ALWAYS great at home. And my wife is also a very good cook. Man, you don’t know what you’re missing.

I'd have to agree, turkey is rarely if ever a bust around here too.. This year family got creative with a fried AND smoked turkey. Turned out perfect!

He doesn’t get out much. He didn’t know which side the ocean was on.

Ah so we have North Sea between us.

Holland is a great place.
