I have searched around and can't seem to find a thread about this, although it certainly seems like something that might have been discussed. I am wondering why some PRS guitars are signed by Paul? I have a 1988 Custom signed by Paul on the back of the headstock. I assumed he just signed all of them in the early years.

I am looking at a 30th Anniversary model that is also signed by Paul on the back of the headstock. I know he didn't do that for all of them...so why this one?

So let's talk Paul's autograph....

Deliberated signing?
Mandatory he signs all Private Stocks.

PRS sent me once a signed 513 backplate to compesante a lean control, which lead to have a left hand vibrato arm in a case of a right hand guitar only, bought as first owner.
Three years later I met Paul in person. He left me with a second backplate with a signed dedication plus the gift of a free modification of my 513 from PCB to PtP (at that time the new standard).

There is no extra worth for trades being personally autographed. I assume the contemporary models (even discontinued) non PS guitars on sale with a autographed, have this by occassion, predominately a clinic, where he was kindly asked by the dealer or owner: "Paul, please would you swing your golden permanent pen?"

Since a few years ago, the back is clean. Rosewood backplates.

And the signed plates rest under plastic.

Maybe more relevant for the individual worth of signed axes are the stories connected with them.
A friend of mine was deliberated at a clinic of Mark Holcomb. I sent him the backplate of my SE Holcomb in advance to be signed, because I had no time.
He did it. But - clown he is sometimes - he wanted to left a funny drawing additionally. As the lines appeared subsequently and turned out to become the outlines of a d#!k, my friend immediately interbented. 'Hey, he's a father of two young children!' Mark tried to do his best to make a heart out of it. 🤣

Meet Paul, give him a paint pen and your guitar, and he will sign whatever. I’ve seen signed headstocks (front and back), back plates, bodies front and back.

Some models exist with his sig from factory… Private Stocks, and Robben Ford models are easy examples.

It dragged me to the world of sloppy strings, @Birdman308.
It became attractive because unusual ingredients in the SE line: the genuine Seymour Duncan set, a WT profile with a 20" radius, maple neck + ebony fretboard, the new logo design on the headstock.

I sent my SC-58 in a couple of years ago to have it inspected by them and they ended up doing a refinish on it. I asked them to have Paul sign the back of the headstock of it before they sent it back. That is the only one that I have with his signature on it, outside of the inlay on the headstock. I will have a second guitar with his signature on it later this year. ;)

I think the first ones he signed were the Signature series in 1989, signed on the headstock front in place of the decal. As said, he signs every Private Stock, and once in a blue moon a special run of some sort.

Paul is very gracious at clinics and spends a lot of time signing things. He did the back of two headstocks for me. One just with his sig, the other made out to me. If it's a random guitar with his sig, it most likely came from an event. Maybe my favorite is I had him sign a truss rod cover to put on my SE.

I like the idea of a truss rod cover with his sig on it. I'd be worried it would wear off somewhere else on the guitar...😢
Not that I'll likely ever get the chance to find out.:( I'd be scared to fly and bring a guitar knowing airlines these days. Would be a perfect reason to do a long trip on my Goldwing, but then carrying a fiddle on it wouldn't be an easy thing. I could always drive the car or truck I guess, take a couple weeks and see some more of this beautiful land....🤔

My Santana has a “ghost” PRSh signature, where I assume someone (not me) decided to remove it -

I only noticed this one day when the sun was shining through the window. I thought to myself:

“Some bastid has scratched my guitar”

Nope!
