I've been playing a 86 pre standard I bought a while back the most of any of my guitars.... Fast forward just about a week ago, a deal came up on a DGT with a nice quilt top at a price I couldn't say no to. The DGT arrived, didn't really care for the color, and the fact the back is black. As always I do my setup on the guitar when I get them. Plugged this in and my jaw dropped, not at all what I expected. I find this week I'm picking up the 86 less and the DTG more, while I don't really care for the looks of the thing, those pickups are sweet and the neck is large but very comfortable. Goes to show you can't judge the book by the cover. Will I keep the DTG - NO, but I'm already looking for one that will be more visually pleasing to me. And I hate the white portions of the moons too, so I'm looking for birds too.

I hope you find the DGT of your dreams.

A cheaper option might be a darker room where you can enjoy the playability and the tone of the one you have, without the visual distractions. :D

I think PRS should sell guitars in natural with a protective cover or make you handle them with rubber gloves, and after you pick them for tone (or wood grain!!!) you can send it to the factory for finishing!

I'm guessing this is wildly out of the realm of reality, but it sure would be fun!

Hey Hackenfort, good to see you here! Hope you're doing well.

The DGT is one model I haven't tried, but I sure will as soon as I see one in one of my dealers.

Good idea! I think the looks should be way down the list after tone/playability/comfort/weight

Yup.

Playability / build quality always first. Tone second (I want it to sound good stock, but I can always improve things unless it's a stinker to start with).

Looks? Last place. I'd happily own an ugly fugger if it was perfect in other regards. If it looked good too then that's a bonus.

For me the DGT is a guitar I had little interest in, as I think PRS already has too many models and I’m not the kind of person to buy an Artist guitar.
The two thinks that shocked me with this, the neck, it’s large, but comfortable more so than almost any new guitar I’ve played in ages. It has nice feel to it, like an older vintage guitar that been played, and the Pickups (Humbucker) mode are IMO some of the better sounding PRS pickups I’ve ever heard. I’m still debating the single coil sounds, not sure if I like them or not, but I’ve been a fan of the 5 way knob for years now.

All in all, If it wasn’t for picking this one up so reasonable, I would have never tried a DGT – and I’m glad I did.

As for looks - lets face it, we all base choice on looks at first. I do agree sound and feel are more important.

Mmmm...I dunno if we all base choice on looks at first...I wouldn't have bought either of my last two for looks. One's a quilt, and I prefer flame; the other's not a color I'd have ordered. What I'll say is that it sure helps when a guitar looks great!

I generally look for an exceptional sounding guitar that also looks good.

But I love them both and would probably jump out a window if something happened to one of them.

My order would be:

Tone
Looks

I've never played a PRS that didn't have great playability so that isn't much of a consideration for a dyed in the wool PRS player like me. And it's so easily tweaked and adjusted.

With PRSi...you don't really have to make this choice. You can have it all.

DGT is a popular model. Plenty of good ones out there that I suspect will capture the same sound / feel as the one you have and be more aligned for you in the looks department. Let it go and start shopping!

I absolutely love my DGT, find another and don't look back! People who don't get it ask me why I have so many guitars, especially PRS, Ibanez and USA Charvel/Jackson. The reason is so obvious to those in the know. They all sound, play, feel and elicit different sonic and emotional responses from me.

It amazes me that with the sheer number of PRSi I own , only the CU24 is duplicated and they all sound, feel and play different.
I love they wide range of choices you get with PRS.

I bought mine used and it came with EMG 81/85 combo. Nothing wrong with that but I've got 12+shredders with that combo. That's why my DGT has BKP's

I bought my DGT based on tone and feel. The finish on mine was the least visually pleasing to me(cherry sunburst) but out of four DGTs in the store it sounded the best to me.If it's a tone machine you have I would redommend you to keep it.I love cherry sunburst now :).It's such a great guitar I don't need any other PRS really....well ok a 408 and Vela perhaps....or a NF3 and a Studio but....
