Ground & Pound Soundman saga

Early start .. spring ambition runs rampant Up at the crack of dawn and having big fun all day .

Laid down rythm tracks for 6 more songs and fleshed out 3 songs with bass and rhtym guitar .. then ..

I remembered my Yamaha keyboard had drum patches .. oh WAY 2 much fun .. the whole keyboard turns in to a number of different styles, tempo is adjustable of course and with the arpeggiator is makes it crazy fun to get a complex drum line.. Then add in a couple of complimentry conga tracks and I'm ready for some Carlos creamy lead on top for dessert.

I'm keeping them to 2 minutes as this batch are instrumental ..and that's as much I need to say musically on each one..

As this is in NO WAY a commercial project, so I don't mind a bit of "cheating" it's just for friends and family to remember me by .

Pulled out my PS cocobolo Angelus and recorded a sweet spanish tinged tract in DADGAD, then added a 12 string backing track. The PS Acoustics are a pure joy to record with . One of my dear friends is coming over to start on her custom guitar project , I hoping to talk her into laying a few tracks down. She's got a CU 24 piezo, an LP, and a Strat so were going with something in the single cut warm twang turf.

I'm leaning towards a walnut/ ziricote neck , slap some 6105 frets on then it's up to her what body in the library she wants .

Pulled out the PS Pernambuco Tonare grand to record an updated version of the first song I wrote on guitar , a lullaby for my now 33 yr old daughter in open G, backed it with the 12 string

Pulled out the Mandolin and my old bell brass Dobro with very light conga and laid down what sounds like an afternoon at a Cantina in Baha ..

12 Originals in 4 days .. must be all the sunshine and warm weather ..

A bit of insomnia , found a missing page from the Portastudio manual, this model has 160GB of memory instead of the listed 80, FAT partions are 16GB not 8 . That is a LOT of space to play with :) (based on the 790MB cds I have that=202!)

Tonight marked the 2nd anniversary of Open Mic ! What a long strange trip it's been . Despite the occasional horror stories, it has really settled into a great event . There are enough regulars so the event flows smoothly , and the newbies quickly learn the bar is pretty high , but the crowd is always VERY supportive.

We had a college age lady and her friend , She was terrified after the first few sets, I asked her if she was performing and what was her talent, I sing but don't play ..can I use my phone ? No worries , the touch of a button and it pairs great through the amp and then to the PA. I assured her this place was Our Living room , and these folks were all Friends and Family . She did great , the crowd loved her and she will be back ..

THAT is why I volunteer!

It keeps getting better , and the word has spread that its one of the best in town.
We've had folks from several states drop in , looking online for Open Mic's while they are here. Some of the other clubs recommend us because of the environment.

We've booked 25 artists,1 a month is a lot more than we ever expected as there are only 2 Friday night songrwriter shows a month.

Expanding the show for another hour on the patio in a couple of weeks , we've decided on a rotating jam to help foster artist collaborations.
Installing a nice shaded place for the artists , string lights and matching furniture

Low volume mic and 1 guitar amped, the rest join in on acoustic and backup , I'll have the conga's . We are going to have tip jar openers for Friday and Sarturdays as well on the Patio

My best friend's wife has been in the hospital all week ... again .. they are scheduling a liver transplant .. As I can't come to the Hospital , I sent her 3 of the new songs that were the most mellow via voicemail . For those that believe in any kind of prayer please include Ms Debbie to one or two , she's a sweetheart. Many thanks

None of the "Like Button" emojis seemed appropriate. She has my prayers. I have an ex-coworker (we've both retired, she first) that is a liver transplant survivor of many years.

Thanks .. my sister called from Hawai'i , she's going in for pancreatic surgery .. geez ... what a week .

On the brighter side , the sun is out , high is expected to be 76 F , the flowers are starting to bloom and I wrote and recorded a new on this morning a classical piece called "Dulce" on my PS Angelus . I was pleased with a first take and it didn't need anything else.

my Angelus is the poster child for the evening now, and I showcase a different PRS each week to play
( good justification for adding another 3 dozen.. just saying )
Thank you Paul and company for making performing so pleasent!

Open Mic tonight should be busy , the boss has ordered the Patio upgrades .. it's looking like it will be a FUN warm weather season .
Weather permitting , I'll start the patio jams next week.

Happy News , the new Pergola will be here to Open the Spring season next week , thank you Boss !

I spent my day off recording acoustic and keyboard basics song tracks , and added instruments to exisiting ones.. Up to 20 as of tonight.
This is becoming a great experience. I'm trying to approach it from a "live" perspective as if your sitting in on a jam and enhance what the basic groove is with each instrument providing it's flavor .

This is the first chance to record any of the vast majority of my collection , and a most pleasent surprise to see how well some record ,some unexpectedly so .. like playing slide on a mandolin ..

Tommorow I'm running sound for one of my Open Mic Artists debut show .. she's very sweet and easy to work with .

Although the turnout was light tonight due to local sports, the show was a delight . At the 9pm break , most of the crowd except her family left and she asked what to do . I said it was the perfect opportunity to stretch out and try something new .. she replied .. .Go get your guitar !
We did a 3 song duet , and then I did a solo .

The crowd picked back up and overall we had a great evening and she will be back. She asked me to play with her next time and will come to Open Mic to practice !! :)

I'd used my phone and headphones from the board to capture a couple of the songs I've been working on ..so the boss could hear them
She really liked them and now wants me to play a whole solo set ... ah come on ..

Success mate, nicely done!

Tonight is kind of special , it marks my 2nd anniversary as Host . It's supposed to be sunny and 76 F when we start the Patio Jam up ...perfect~

The "double set up" is going to be more labor , but I'm keeping it as lean as possible . For the patio: my little Boss acoustic drum machine (plugs into the Aux in on the amp) my Mesa Rosette acoustic amp ( 2 ch 150w each) I'll hook up a mic to one channel , we'll keep it just loud enough to drown out the traffic and allow for the non amped folks to join in. IF I can fit in a conga I will.

Inside I'm bringing keys for the main show as well and the usual Fender SFX ( 2x 100w) through the PA . Should be big fun

Spring is in the air along with pollen count of 2896!! * CDC says High is 200..welcome to the ATL ...

We skipped the outside pre-show due to the weather, and stayed inside. I had a delightful 40 minute jam with a new to us artist .
He was one of those looks older but isn't gents , rekindling his love of performing .. an Elvis fan and that was fine I love those tunes.

The show was another packed night and all but 1 artist was really enjoyable .. New talents and returning favorites were really delightful.

The square peg had missed the cutoff last week and had stormed off , this week he had a chip on his shoulder and was rude to everyone..
He decided to unplug at stage volume, mid song because he "didn't think he needed a PA" .. that saved us all from more aural discomfort.

I politely asked him to terminate his visit when he was done , and that he should explore the other 20 open mics in town for a better fit.
The boss told me after she was glad I did , he was very rude to the baristas as well ...

Some people just don't get it......

Good news the shaded Pergola arrived for the Patio refresh , it will go up on Monday after the weekend shows . The pollen count was an all time US record today so working outside was not going to happen .. 14,081 !!!! Going outside was like being on Arrakis during a sandstorm... Hopefully it will rain soon .. at least the flowers and bees are loving it

75F and 73% humidity with 7000+ pollen count tonight.
Due the the massive storm and pollen , the patio upgrade got pushed to next week.

I repainted the battered Mic stands in the bosses fave color .. Teal .. with copper accents .. she loves it ,, brightens the stage a bit ( she has several wing back chairs in the same color , and the back of the bar is tiled in teal) .

One of our Barista's is an Interior Design student , so the Update is part of her project ... The Stage is getting a spruce up , interior paint , and the Patio it should be an AWESOME spring / summer season . We are shooting for our 3 consecutive 'Best of North Atlanta" award.

I'm looking forward to working with these folks on Saturday , they are a pure joy.
